Cooling Tower Educational Material
I'm new to the group and am impressed by its helpful participants. I haven't seen any current discussions of cooling towers- an area where I feel I can contribute.
I've collected collected considerable info over the years so, if you have any cooling tower related inquiries,Last edited by chillin out; 06-09-2008 at 01:13 AM. Reason: Sorry, posting a link to another disscusion board is not allowed.

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
Hi
What I am interested is how do we match a cooling tower capacity (tonnage) and pump flow for the chiller and condenser. Right now I am using a 5f40 carrier SST40F and SDT 110F

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
Hi there. Ive just moved to Sydney from England and have landed a job in a food process factory. Here my responsibilities are managing the 23 cooling towers, amongst many other systems. I came from background in small commercial work so would be massively grateful if you could point me in direction of any information enlightening me in this area. My email is Erick_Davey@hotmail.com.
Much appreciated. All the best. Eric

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
Hey Guys.
I've been engaged in a task to select either air cooled chillers or cooling towers to cool the lubrication system of an equipment. The lubrication system is built with an internal heat exchanger and the heat load generated is about 1000kW. The required inlet water temperature is around 20-40 Celsius. The outlet water temperature from the lubrication system is around 30-50 Celsius. Please bear in mind the maximum ambient temperature is 50 Celsius and minimum ambient temperature is -3 Celsius.
I'm opting for the cooling towers as it's cheaper. I tried to search for reference materials but to no avail, hence I would appreciate if you guys can help with the questions below:
1. What is the typical cooling capacity of a cooling tower?
2. Would a cooling tower be problematic in a mine site?
3. Utilizing cooling tower would require a dosing system and constant addition of water. Besides that, what are the main disadvantages of Cooling Towers?
4. Is there a book that list the rule of thumb in selecting either air cooled chiller or cooling tower?

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
Heat rejection factor shall be found from Carrier condenser chart which is around 1.24 for water cooled condensers and Refrigeration TR need to be multiplied with HRF and the Cooling tower need to be selected for heat removal of
HRF x Refrigeration TR

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
Quick question, how the air will behave, if the temp of the water is below the wet bulb temp of the air.
Will water will still evaporate?
Will outlet air gets cooled? What will be the sensible cooling factor?

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
A Cooling tower removes heat from water by using evaporation. In an evaporative cooling tower, a small segment of the water that has been cooled is allowed to evaporate in to the moving airstream to provide significant cooling to the remainder of the water stream.

Re: Cooling Tower Educational Material
basically, you can search the water flow rate of condenser and the water temp. range in chillier catalogue. For example, 300 m3/h of water flow rate, and 37 C hot to 32 C cold water,
then, you should give a safety factor for water flow rate (like 1.2),
the cooling tower design water flowrate is 300 x 1.2 = 360 m3/h
so you can give the cooling tower design condition,
flowrate: 360 m3/h
hot water: 37 c
cold water: 32 c
wet bulb temp.: based on you local area condition, normally 27 C (north american, canada), 28 C(hot area related)
