Daikin faults

I work onboard a survey ship and we have just been in port to have a new server room fitted and in that room we have 2 wall mounted Daikin FAQ71BVV1B units connected to an external unit (not sure what it is yet, haven't had a chance to remove the housing to see). It is qute important that we keep the temperature cool as we have a large number of servers and equipment in the room but our Daikin units keep switching themselves off. The lcd flashes the code U2 which appears to be a fault code related to the power supply for the external unit. Is anyone able to shed any further light on this? We are several days out of port and need to get this fixed a.s.a.p.

U2 = Power supply voltage insufficient or instantaneous power failure.

As these machines are on a ship my initial thought is that the generator isn't coping at all times and you sometimes gets voltage drops.

When you have power supply problems on a generator supply, it is always a help if you install soft start kits.
This reduces the inrush currents and then the gennies can cope.

The Daikin FAQ71 indoor units are 240/1/50 (fan only). Nominal 7.1kW cooling.
The outdoor units could be any of the following:

REQ71BV3 - Fixed speed 240v 1ph start 75.7amps
REQ71BW1- Fixed speed 400v 3ph start 47.1amps
RZQ71CV1 - Inverter 240v 1phase start 4amps
RZQS71CV1 - Inverter 240 1phase start 4amps

All are reversible heat pumps.
Sounds like you have the fixed speed type with the higher start currents. As Frank states check the generator loading / capacity. Soft starters might help. Last resort would be to change the fixed speed outdoor units for the low starting current inverter type. approx. £1,200 each for the most expensive RZQ version which can operate in cooling down to -15c ambient. The RZQS model is cheaper but can only operate in cooling down to -5c ambient & is less efficient.
These systems wouldn't be my choice for a marine installation.

The ship's electrician is having a lok at the power supply etc as we speak. Hopefully it will be something that he can fix.

Unfortunately, we had no input on the preparation of the server room prior to installation so we're stuck with the units we have got. Fingers crosse we can get it sorted though or it's back into port which won't make the company very happy....although we can get to the pub for a bit
