Oil Pot for Pumps in NH3 Plant
One Suggestion form the Operator on a Ammonia Plant with @ 400KW Capacity ( -40 DegC).
As per his experience, it is better to put a OIL pot for the Pumps near the Suction. During the Shut off his vews are Some Oil does settle in the Pump Inlet area & can cause some serious problmes eventually.
Any experience on this?

Re: Oil Pot for Pumps in NH3 Plant
Another issue that could contribute to this is the actual vessel design. The pump suction lines are usually projected up into the vessel several inches. The reason for this is to allow the oil to collect in the overhead vessel so that it can drain down into the oil pot.
Having said that, it is conceivable that some oil could collect in the pump itself over a period of time for an inactive pump. One way to deal with this is to activate the stand pump every so often to clear it of oil.If all else fails, ask for help.

ou have a good point there. Can you throw more light on this. What should be the length protruding inside?

Re: Oil Pot for Pumps in NH3 Plant
Like wat iceman says the dry suction pipe is project up a few inches away from the vessel cap. But in Singapore we actually drill a 5mm hole just at the dry suction pipe area to drain off the oil just to the bottom of the vessel. we will then create a 1/4' pipe just at the lowest point of the vessel and then attach the oil pot there.
