    PED Category's

One of our customers is questioning whether equpiment we installed is under the correct category under PED. From my understanding the category is decided by the size of the liquid reciever, however he says it is decide by the accumulator.

As a result he says the equipment we installed in CAT III, whereas we argue it is CAT I. Someone is meeting with him to discuss it, but I was wondering if anyone would have a link to the specific directives for PED which state the different category's and what falls into what.

Many Thanks in advance for help recieved.

    Re: PED Category's

The category is defined as Pressure times the volume (P x V).
‘Volume (V)’ means the internal volume of a chamber,
including the volume of nozzles to the first connection or weld and excluding the volume of permanent internal parts.
For split units, like condenserless, compressor packs, condensing units, etc. the installer must calculate the total volume after installation and correctly cathegorise the newly build assembly.
‘Assemblies’ means several pieces of pressure equipment assembled by a manufacturer to constitute an integrated and functional whole.
The assessment of category must be performed on the assembly.

    .

    Dunno about 'clued up', Abe!
PED interpretation can be a nightmare.

You can read about the PED, including all the official data on the Europa site here:

    http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/press.../index_en.html
Texts and guidelines etc. are down the left side.

The DTI used to have some useful guides on their web site, but this seems to have disappeared since they were re-branded as BERR last year. Here’s their new site – some guidance documents are available:
    http://www.berr.gov.uk/dius/innovati...page12629.html
This is the latest (april 2005) guide from that site http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file11284.pdf
it explains the categories and the assessment modules.

    UK pressure Equipment regulations here:
    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/19992001.htm
    amendments:
    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2002/uksi_20021267_en.pdf

    Good luck.
