Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
Hi guys
im after a book called Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning one of the engineers at work reccommended it to me. He said that it had over 1000 pages and he paid 40 pounds for it. Iv been looking for it everywhere but there seems to be a few of the books around, some of them have 250 pages some have 700 pages and some have 1200 pages but they all seem to be at least 60 pounds and the author is american? So id imagine the units and measurements are in American. Has anyone got this book for sale or know where i can get it a little cheaper ( although if its as good as the engineer says then il pay 60 pounds) i just dont want to spend 60pounds on abook and find its the wrong one. Any help would be appreciated
thanks in advance

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
hi marc the book i think your freind is referring to is a hefty tome indeed and has been recommended to all our apprentices attending college on an nvq2 course. it is written by three gentlemen called andrew d. althouse, carl h. turnquist and alfred f. bracciano. it is published by GW and its catelogue number is ISBN 1-56637-724-2. you can go into any good bookshop and they will be able to order it if you give them that number. it has been reissued every few years. the book is ok, but not one i would carry around as a reference book in the field due to it's size around 2 1/2" thick. i would recommend roy dossats book due to its compact but comprehensive coverage of refrigeration. i have referred to this book so often that i am on my 2nd copy and nearly ready for a third due to it's tired and dogeared pages. i can't remember how much it is but i would definately recommend it as a library starter.

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
I would highly recommend both books. I received them during some formal training sessions and schooling many years ago.
They must be good... The books keep getting updated and reprinted.

I dont know how useful this book would, but for the U.S. members I have found this book helpful.

Sometimes the old books are much better too.

Old books are writen with patience. The writer think how to explain some procedure or calculation method. Now all is copy paste method.

Josip, one of the best books about Industrial Refrigeration, just something for you.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
Josip, I'm glad you got the book!!
I think my all time favorite book is principles of refrigeration by Roy Dossat and Thomas J Horan, one of the first book I bought and still the best one.

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
Dossat is the book I use but it must be about time somebody produced a new one, I used Dossat 30 years ago when I was a student and am still using it as a tutor. I have the second edition which was in SI units which for me is great but the latest version has both and gets a bit confusing.

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
At least the US is consistant.
Consider the UK.
It is illegal to sell food products in anything but metric, but:
We drink pints
We buy Gallons of fuel
We drive to MPH
Baby's are born and declared - 8lbs 3oz etc not kg
we measure in metric but tape measures still show inches
Coinage is Metric
I am 12stone 3 lbs (just short for my body mass index)
Fridge pipe is imperial (who has asked for a roll of 6.4mm pipe?) but plumbing pipes are metric
We buy eggs in Dozens
Recipes call for 250g of this and that?
Etc Etc.
Tony Blair - sort it out

Re: Modern Refrigeration and Air conditioning Book
are you aware in the not to distant future it will be illegal in the UK to sell anything in imperial measurements you wont even be allowed to buy an imperial spanner it will have to be stamped with a metric size.
