Exclamation Ammonia compressor's energy saving by inverter

    Hello all,
I am new commer from Thailand.
I have some technical question which need your kindly advise.
Our customer has Mycom 8B Ammonia compressors.
They would like to apply inverter to control speed of compressor (Energy saving purpose)
I do not has any experience about this application before.
Would you kindly advise how and concerned things.

This is piston/reciprocating compressor (seems as buster) and there are some limits regarding use of inverter to control speed (there is a big difference between screws and reciprocating compressors).....

.....you should contact Mycom regarding this....or just check what is the maximum speed of el. motor (according to manual it is 1200rpm to 1450rpm, if I am looking in good one) which can be coupled to your compressor and then adjust your inverter according to that data..

......be careful...with over speed you can damage your compressor....

Reciprocating compressors are better at partial load (how many cylinders are working that much energy you use)...not possible to save some more energy, except if you switch it off, but you can increase speed and get a bigger capacity....

...here on the RE forums we have been discuss about that matter and, please try to search about....

some other members will revert also, I'm sure....

Hope this is of some help...

    Best regards, Josip

Re: Ammonia compressor's energy saving by inverter

As Josip said, you need to be aware of the maximum and minimum RPM limits. You do not want to exceed the maximum RPM as the compressor will break quickly. The minimum RPM is determined by the oil pressure supplied by the crankshaft driven oil pump on a recip. compressor.

The energy savings is accomplished by the fine tuning ability of the inverter and and control loop. If you can modulate the compressor speed when capacity increase or decrease is required, this is more effective than loading or unloading the compressor at full speed.

An inverter on a recip. compressor is a very nice way to control capacity.
If all else fails, ask for help.

Re: Ammonia compressor's energy saving by inverter

    Hi Josip and US Iceman,

Thank you very much for your information.
It mean I should concern Max & Min speed of compressor motor which compressor's still work OK.
And do not allow motor speed is out of range.
And if I apply temp. control loop by inverter.
I can save energy, reduce starting-current than On-Off control.
    Is it correct?

    Thank you

Re: Ammonia compressor's energy saving by inverter

You need to ask the compressor manufacturer what their maximum and minimum RPM is, then make sure the inverter control does not allow these speeds to be exceeded.

Either temperature or pressure control is acceptable, but it depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
If all else fails, ask for help.

    Thank you very much.
I will check Mycom local office as your suggest.
