    Welcome.

First, the drier is meant to catch moisture so as long as it doesn't get "filled" with more moisture than it can hold/store then it's not an issue.
(Well, apart from the fact that there shouldn't be moisture in the system in the first place, it's a good indication of poor workmanship)

The easiest way to see if you got moisture in the system is by fitting a sight glass with moisture indicator.
(There are other ways but the sight glass is easy and cheap)

And YES, it will damage the compressor. For example, modern refrigeration compressor oils will become acidic even with small amounts of moisture in them.

one of the first things that it will effect but not the only is the expansion valve or metering unit will start blocking and shuting the system down on LP,also the drier may run cold to the touch on the out going side, you can also check this with a infa red thermometer for ease, theese are just basic pointers for you that will arise normaly before any problems occur with the compressor, an oil change is a must on a contaminated system, this will help protect it while changing the drier at least once should remove the problem unless its saturated, now thats another storey.

Filter can hold more mositure with cold liquid (like in winter) and release it back when liquid becomes warm (summer) and therefore blocking your TEV
It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
