This is a photograph of the inside of a suction line on an R-22 hydro-chiller plant. Apparently they have a broken chiller that has been leaking water into the refrigerant side... I was told that the operating engineers got tired of changing the filter drier cores so they just stopped putting them in the housing instead of finding out why they were plugging up in the first place!

Looks like the inside of a cold trap.
If the chiller tubes are leaking they could change cores every hour and it would not dry the system!:o
It just amazes me that the guys running this plant didn't notice that there was a problem the first time they had to change the cores. An R22 system that runs at 25°F SST usually is not going to have a moisture infiltration problem. I heard after I posted this that they had removed all the expansion valves from the system, installed a low side pump separator, and installed hand expansion valves because they couldn't get the TXV's to feed. The ultimate band-aid for a broken chiller but even that eventually didn't solve their problem...Quote:
