Split, via a capillary tube or a TXV.
VRF/VRV a little more complicated but the same principles.
What is your level of knowledge/expertise? This will help to form answers.

Thank you for the reply, I am in my first year of my apprenticeship in industrial fridge but did spend a couple of years split bashing with no knowlege of how the systems controlled especially vrf,, hense the curiosity. I am struggling to find any detailed informaion on vrf that's not a sales booklet though,
VRV/F's are either set up with 2 pipes or 3 pipes from outdoor to indoor.
The 2 pipe systems are much the same as a multi head split system where all the units have to be set to either heating or cooling. The 2 pipes are liquid line and suction line (cooling) and discharge and liquid (heating). Each indoor unit will have its own electronic expansion valve controlling the refrigerant flow to that particular indoor. They use sensors to constantly monitor the superheat and open close accordingly. Once the indoor reaches its setpoint the valve closes stopping refrigerant flow.
A 3 pipe system has 3 refrigerant lines running to a BS or BC box. (a box with solenoid valves to select heating or cooling) The 3 lines are Liquid line, Discharge line and Suction line. from the BS box there will be 2 lines running to each individual indoor unit. The 3 pipe system allows heating and cooling to be selected individually.

Hey, if you have a look at some pipe diagrams you can see the whole system and how/where it works, LG equipment is poor but the pipe diagrams found here: http://www.mylg.co.uk/productdatabooks.html are good.
