Refrigeration training

Hi, folks! I wonder if there is someone out there that can help me? I am currently working as a industrial fridgy and am looking to further my career by doing some more studying and gaining a HNC in refrigeration. Problem is i live in Aberdeen and the course has to be distance learning! I have hunted high and low for this course and to no avail. Does anyone know of a course? Even if there is someone out there who has been in my situation and has any advise it would be greatly appreciated!!! :o

Grimsby College (N.E. Lincolnshire) do a HNC in Refrigeration Course. Obviously it's quite a while from Aberdeen, but I'm a student there and the tutors are really nice guys, and it's a good atmos really.

Thanks for that Tim, I've already been onto grimsby college but they dont do the course on distance learning. Great place to study tho, i did my level 2 and 3 there on block release and the lecturers were very helpful and clued up! :p

You could try South Bank Uni. I'm told that they're the premier refrigeration uni, and if they don't do a distance course, they'll probably be able to tell you if there is one.
Also, how about the Open University? I don't believe that they do refrigeration as such, but there are some modules that are basically the same, and I know that HNC modules count towards their courses, so I presume it works the other way around?

If you do find something could you let me know as i am in a similar situation up here in Peterhead. There was word of the broch college starting a refrigeration course but as yet there has be no info forthcoming.
We are also struggling to find someone to come and do the C&G ammonia handling course as we are so far away.

You could try contacting the IOR to see if they can help - I'm not a member but surely this is what professional orgs are for?

As for ammonia, if you don't have your own equipment the only place I know of is Polar Pumps in Doncaster who have their own training rig, it's a 2-day course. Presume there are others around but not that many.

answer to your question if you work for the company I think you do is speak to Bill and ask him if you can do your HNC/HND up in scotland and then come down to us at Grimsby and do the 4 fridge specific units only. I have a guy who lives in Fraserborough who is hopefully coming down next year as well, we actually have one guy this year driving up from Bristol once a week to do the HNC. Once we get our NVQ2 and 3 distance learning materials complete we are going to produce HNC distance learning materials.

let me know when you get the HNC stuff sorted, we would be interested in the fridge units at least, as no HNC's in fridge are available in N.Ireland.
