Can i by-pass a relay on the common wire to the compressor ?

Hi all,

I was wondering if i can by-pass the wire going in to the little black relay and put it to the common terminal on the compressor just to see if the compressor runs and gets the customer going until i return with a new one, or is this to harmfull to the compressor?

What you are suggesting in principle is acceptable and done quite regularly.

But and it is a big but.. But you need to confirm the relay is faulty and not some
other component. You also need to know what controls the relay and what
the effect of by-passing it will have.

If every thing is ok and the relay has simply failed then by-passing it would
prove you to be correct, but remember the relay might be taking the load off
the starting circuit. If you by pass the relay the load (electrical) will be
on the control circuit and it might not be rated for it.

Do it to test and prove your point but be very certain that the control circuit
is designed for the starting current of the compressor. If you don't you
will burn out some more pieces of equipment and will be worse off.

Why not just dead test the compressor?

How do you dead test it??

Dead test..i.e. no power applied.

Megger the windings and measure the winding resistances

Thanks Rob, i by-passed it for half a day until i went back and got a new relay. Jobs a good one..

Frank, cheers for that. I did do a resistance test and mechanically test which it was ok. I was just concerned in buggering it up by-passing the relay but the customer wanted it running there and then.
