1923 - Aussie Kero/Ammonia system - E. Hallstrom ( manufacturer )

My mate has this one but we arent old enough to know how to revive it , yes some ammonia & water I guess but how much inside before firing up th twin kerosene burners ?

We have the "cabinet " that the small icy ball style evaporator goes in if we can get it running .

i see no one has replied to u
1. do not open system with a flame or a cutting disc, i can explode as the mixture consists of ammonia ,water and hydrogen.
2. ammonia fridges are making a comback due to power blackouts and for camping purposes.
3. try someone who makes ammonia fridges as the mixture needs to be right and in the correct ratios.
4. before taking it in for repair try putting for a couple of hours ,u repreat this a couple of times,
becuase the ammonia crytalizes if not used for o long time this can decrystalize it if u can put it that way.
5. best to take it to someone who does it regulary

sorry turn it upside down a couple of time , thyen stand it at 45degress in upright position for a hour or 2 so the water can sink and the hydrgen rise so no air lock can happen

Well at least the data plate tells you how much NH3 to put in it........

I had to fix one of these things when I was an apprentice. The boss told me to put it upside down on the trailer and take it for a ride for a few hours. I did, when I got back inbetween doing another job I pluged it in (3 in 1) and it worked. It could use kero, electric or a candle I think. But it was a very long time ago.

There used to be an old guy who fixed absorption caravan fridges I think in Elizabeth not sure if he is still working.
I have heard of turning these fridges upside down before and apparently it works.

I think its really a historical or museum piece ( any offers of money for this beast will be considered )
but then again if theres a complete failure of the power supply companies Ill be able to keep my beer cold and
thats all that matters .
