What compressor?

Hi all, i'm new to these forums, and i hope some of you are able to help answer some questions i have...

I have made a couple of R134a systems, all using 1/8hp - average compressors, however, i now want to go a lot further!!

I am aiming for the magical 'optimum' running temperature of -178°C (or near to)

some potential gasses..

Gas Boiling point
R-14 (-150°C @ 350psi)
R-50 (-162°C @ 450psi)
R-740 (-120°C @ 300psi) argon

However, i haven't a clue where to start off, by finding a compressor capable of handling these temperatures and pressures without forking out thousands of pounds on a cryogenic system
can anyone please help?

No offence but clearly you have no idea about what you want to play with. Keep learning and you'll get there.

Now a more direct answere is there are non you either fork out the cash or learn how to make cascades and there is a ton you'll need to learn to do that safely and reliably.

I would say it would almost impossible to get that. Why? because you are in liquid nitrogen territory. If someone made a "reliable" system then they would already have it out. These compressors are custom made with oil loops and extended discharge piping in the compressors. Not a stock item. Good luck to you!

Your talking very dangerous territory here, the pressures you are talking about are way beyond standard refrigeration kit and should you try it you waould have a big hole were the plant used to be if anything went wrong.

Hi, -178°C, thats bloody cold lol.
I have seen a few cascade systems reach -130 on four stages for pc chips and that was using normal hermetic compressor, I think reaching the temperature you desire is going to cost you big $$$$$£££££ money. Good luck :]

Handbags, now fish i suppose the handbags might withstand -178 C until you touched it and fish is very expensive at the minute?

I work on factory built autocascades for the semiconductor industry, I have been to the plant in Sharon, Boston USA where they are built, the cascade plumbing assembly is an extremely complex affair, made by a specialist copper tube fabrication house, the compressors used were the Danfoss LTZ/NTZ series and the gases used are typically R134a, R14, R336fa. These older systems achieve typically -70C and are critical charge systems. The company have been working hard on a -95C autocascade using a scroll compressor, and it has been in production only for the last 2 years, I have met some of the top refrigeration design engineers there and they feel that they are pushing things to the limit a bit, tryint to keep ahead of the competition. My point is, that if a major player in autocascades is having to put so much time/expense into getting these low temperatures, then it is beyond the reach of the everyday guy to build such extreme systems safely.
