What is the purpose of having the capillary tube soldered to the suction line.
Does it subcool the liquid refergerant, prevent slugging or it to relieve stress on the cap tube. Ive wanted to know for a while

Capillary tubes either run inside the suction or are brazed
to the suction for a few reasons, some of which you mentioned.
The capillary is quite fragile so by attaching it to the suction
it gives it extra strength and support it also helps with the heat
exchange as you said, between the two pipes. It does not
subcool the liquid because the restriction of the capillary is already
reducing the pressure throughout its length but the heat exchange
is helping increase the temperature of the vapour in the suction pipe.
