Comp overheated and Clavus 68

Hi Guys
For the last couple of days.
My colleague and I have been stripping and inspecting a very large 8 cylinder recip.
This is on a NH3 system.
Historically there has been a problem where the discharge valves have failed.
Resulting in the compressor seriously overheating.
Leaving the comp full of that familiar black carbonised oil / residue.

Now I am sure that there are plenty of guys out there that have been there?

My question is in these politically correct times!

What chemicals does anyone use to clean out a compressor full of this gunk?

I was thinking of using Paraffin cloths and elbow grease?
Is there anything newer on the market that anyone has used?

Hi grizzly now a days i use jizzer with lint free cloth and it cleans really well and i used it on an ammonia compressor which was like if it had black paste in it and it came up very well, it also smells nice

A very long day!
When I woke up I realised that Gaz meant Jizer!
My only quandary with that is that it is water based is it not?
Therefore I was wondering if there were alternatives?

I personaly use a industrial grade scouring pads ( like you may use for cleaning pots/pans but coarser ) .
It can be used with kerosene or solvent and elbow grease like you say
, then flush housing and crankcase out .
Then mop out + dry with lint free cloth .

Hello Grizzly:)

we use neat degreaser, valve parts can be rinsed off in the sink with warm water, the rest can be wiped off.

In the past I have used diesel, this can then go in the tank with the waste refrigerant oil.

I have also had the joy of using a chisel and hammer to remove hard carbon from the sump:(

To be Honest.
I am rather hoping
that the excessive wear that has accompanied the Overheating.
May well of put paid to the need to
Rebuild the machine!
And therefore the need to clean it, I am not looking forward to that prospect.
(They won't let me use a pressure washer-- To many electrical's about! spoil sports!)

Hi Grizzly, you too demanding, I use in this case, cloth and hands, often I replace the oil filter and oil, but your problem will be larger, pipes, separators ... Good luck Josef

Hi Grizzly, I have been using Jizer now for the last 3 years as they changed the old safety clean units at work for sme food safe units that are just hot water and detergent. It's all right until you start to get small cuts from the inside the service ports on the grasso crank case. I do not know about you but Clavus 68 seems not to be as good as the Mobile Artic 300 when you have a compressor overheated,seem's lots more carbon build up from it.

Your right about the degreasers supplied now.
Hence my original question.
I may be wrong, but I am sure the fundamental difference between Clavus and Artic.
Is that Clavus is a Mineral Oil and Arctic is POE.
And yes it is good stuff.
It's the one that I have mentioned before about having scrubbing / Cleaning properties.
And yes you are correct it's the Clavus part of the equation that produces the really stubborn Carbon.
Andy mentions chiselling heavy carbon deposits.
On one site the "Carbon removal" Product we had would dissolve the pistons if you left it in submersed for to long.
Mind you a drum of it stripped back my Victorian Stair spindles a treat.

I suspect that "COSH" has put paid to that sort of chemical usage nowadays.

Rangers suggestion of Kerosene may be acceptable?

Dear sir
In my country for us difficult to find new chemical product compare with other country
So I use to clean carbonized with benzene ((same you put in your car)) It is very good after you washed and cleaned with cotton cloths .
if you leave it benzene vaporized or if you in hurry after you wash it you can clean benzene by air
Result of carbonized is compressor overheating you should find it why it happen ?
1-Might you need cool top cylinders by water or air
2- Might you have air in your system?
3- Might your oil cooler is not cooling good.
4- If your suction pressure is too low also it happen
5- Etc.

There is no way anyone would be allowed to clean down a compressor.
Within a working plant room with petrol!
I assume that is what you mean by benzene?

Thank you for your thoughts on the compressor overheat problem.
I used the term "historic" to signify that we already know the cause of the overheating.
And that the problem was in the past!
IE, is no longer a problem,
And may I add, well before we got involved!

Anyway once again thank you, but I think I Will give benzene a miss, this time around!

Hi Grizzly, We used to have a carbon removal product that was made by Link chemicals, good for removing paint and carbon but as you said leave any thing that was plated it would start to remove it as well. found out by one engineer who was cleaning up engine parts for his show car. In the end we had to use full chemcial suit and B.A. as the 25 lts. drum looked like a ball and starting to leak. I will stay with Jizer for now and elec. contact cleaner on the valve parts.

If you have attention first I wrote in our country it is difficult to find this kind chemical goods.
Might it is forbidden in your country to use petrol but in our country is not.
Benzene is as same as petrol but without color .

Back again.
The Big Clean Up is pending!
One of my Colleagues from another Depot has suggested using WD 40.
Apparently you can buy it in industrial sized tins?
Does anyone know where and what's everyones opinion of using it?

WD40 without the trademark often used to prevent carbon & iron parts from rusting: valves and similar. IT LEAVES A FILM like wax behind that contains chlorides...

Sources and reviews vary: but the diesel engine shops in this area use a liquid floor cleaner-degreaser, one of which is Vigor M.

There's a whole series of cleaners out there based on Orange Peel extracts (Dilimonene, and inhibitors). Dilimonene will cut grease very capably but in its raw form it is somewhat corrosive.

For my own personal use....Well, I have a neighbor who owns a dry cleaner....

Could you phone one of the compressor rebuild people and ask them what they use when the get one in to rebuild in a similar state?

Or possibly something from the automotive world as i'm sure they would have stuff for cleaning out engines before rebuilding.

Our screw shop used to use a harsh Naptha based cleaner similar to that you'd find at a auto repair shop, but some of our office folks were a little sensitive to it so we had to change to a "gentler" cleaner. It doesn't work quite as well but good enough and it's still Naptha based. We use Shell "SHELLSOL D60" - it's supposed to be environmentally friendly, but then nothing is after parts have been washed in it. You might be able to find more info on Shell's web site.

On Tuesday and today I have been cleaning out said Compressor.
I used Cotton Rags and Jizer (neat )
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
It is incredible stuff.
I filled one of those little hand spray bottles up with the stuff.
Sprayed an area left it to "soak in" and wiped it off.
I could literally watch it dissolve the oily / carbon deposits.
I am truly impressed as you guys implied there are not short cuts and it is laborious.
But I now have a clean machine with which to work on.
Plus the 35yrs of oil and crap accumulated around it.
At least I will be able to work on it without being covered in oily crap!
Mind one negative is you do need to shower at the end of the day as it stinks you and your clothes out.

PS the customer could not believe he had a Red Plant room floor!! (He! He!)
