Prestcold Semi-hermetic

Hi, I live in the US, where Prestcold products are largely unavailable (you go into a supplier and ask them about Prestcold and get the "deer in the headlights" look).
I have Prestcold-Thermetic condensing unit I am trying to replace the compressor and possibly the whole condensing unit with a copeland model. It's a model# TC-200/AL-12 condensing unit with a Prestcold semi-hermetic compressor, part# 57170/7525, model# L640I, date code 84-09. Does anyone have any specs on this unit, HP, capacity, etc.?

It's a 2Hp Low Temp R-12 unit.

10,600 btuh @ -10 SST @ 95 amb

8400 btuh @ -20 SST @ 95 amb


Never throw away old catalogs, regardless of what some people think. There's plenty of HVACR information that's not on the internet. ;)

most were R12 med/high and R502L, not being picky,just might help you with your selection.;)

Designated 12H (High back pressure) 22M (Medium Back pressure) 502L (LBP). Copeland did virtually identical model range side by side. I am sure you can find a close if not exact replacement in their range

Sorry if I am about to put a spanner in the works but are you sure it is an L6 designation. Prestcolds begin with S then L, LG, PLG as each is superseded so L6 is probably LG (they do look alike). Only problem there is:confused: the 401 I know was an L compressor although had the same displacement as the newer LG of 0062 (cfm I believe). So I would guess you have an LG401 compressor. If this is the case then this is a 4 horse power compressor, with a 0062 displacement. There should be a displacement code of "V" on the name plate. All Prestcold hp's come from the number in their names divided by 100 for early compressors (then 10 later on when they got an X added to designate POE oil) ie an S33 would be 1/3hp an L/LG400 would be 4hp etc. All this is of course in the UK don't see why it should not be the same in US. If this is all okay so far then the compressor you have is equivalent in size duty etc to a Copeland DLSG401 now a 40X (ie POE oil). The only thing I can see that would make a difference to the duties is the power supply as Prestcolds were as far as I know made for the UK 240V/380V what supply do you have there - were some made for US market don't know this :confused:can only say what we have in the UK. But I do know the part number you gave is a Bone Fide NRS (Nationwide Refrigeration Supplies) part number who were the sole suppliers of Prestcold compressors (don't ask how I know that it's sad enough that I do;);)).

Just looked at your post again and to be honest I wonder do you have a 4hp compressor on a 2hp condensing unit as that is what it looks like to me as the Cond unit is designated as a TC200 I would guess a 2hp and AL12 I would guess as R12 and the AL could be low temperature. Dont mean to be smart in fact fridge guys like myself are usually a bit slow and low tec so the boffins usually put on the label what it does to help us. :cool:

hi its a L200/0050 , the bore size is 2 3/16. newer version is PL200/50, the copeland version is DLLB 201 ,the bore size is 2 3/8

some guy i knlow used to work for prestcold,he informed me that cpoeland let the patent lapse and prestcold copied it?myth or fact not sure.

Actually guys, the numbers he gave are correct and the capacity are what I previously posted.

Prestcold was in the USA until the late 80's. I sold quite a few in the Atlanta GA market. Copeland bought them and shut em down.

I still have my original Prestcold catalog. I'm thinking of copying the specs and listing them on my web-site, I'm just not sure of the demand.

the 57170 numbers are the part numbers,i know this as i was in the stores at prestcold 36 years ago :D and i,am presuming that even then there was not much call for R12L !! so they used to run R12H--R502L, [well the operating pressures are close] not sure about the books now but thats how it was.;)as you know prestcold was part of british leyland cars and all the vans were morris 1000,s and J4 ,s,i also know this as i used to have to wash them,:( sterne joined them there at nottingham anyway then i left and did not "o"gormans buy them out.:eek:

mistake number 2 :rolleyes:39 years ago,1971, and thinking back the marina vans started to come in and the dreaded sherpas.:Dthose fond memorys, humping those prescold compressors into the back of vans,ML16 cabinets onto the lorry,:) lovely....

I still see a few S body Prestcolds with the four bolt sight glass running on farms, badged as Preststeel. Had the fan motors clamped by a four bolt cradle, and the fan gaurd with the gaps so big you could put your hand through :eek: :D

Iceberg, what's the TEV and size, this will remove doubts.
The TEV for a 2 hp and a 4 hp will be a lot different.

tc / 200 is a 2hp .

I don't think i've ever seen one, but i'll keep my eyes open :)
All the belt drive units i've seen on farms tended to be Fridgidaire ones on Gascoinge tanks, now mostly long since gone...
