We have a blast freezer coil ( R 404A) & the circuit is as shown. What is the best way of putitng up the expansion valve. Logically it sould be horizontal?

Hi

Normally the coil manufacturers would put a pipe extension from the liquid distributor, connect into that.
If not, the liquid distributor should normally face vertically up or down, not horizontally side ways, if liquid is feed to the distributor horizontally liquid would start to feed the lower distribution lines first rather than equally to all distriution lines, if it is fitted vertically up or down liquid will feed all distribution lines equally.

On DX, I would normally use a down feed on the distributor and a coil outlet on the bottom.

You can use up feed on the distributor.

An Expansion Valve can be fitted in any direction. From the attachment sent by you, the Blast Freezer Coil is of FrigaBohn make and has multi circuit. This means that there is going to be a distributor. The distributor has an orifice inside, which ensures uniform mixing and flow of vapour and liquid to all the circuits. Please study the Bulletin 10.9 of Sporlan.

The fixing of TEV totally depends on the space arrangement and available. The distance from the TEV to the distributor should not exceed 24" and preferrably there should not be any bend immediately after the TEV.
