View Full Version : r134 is a drop of r 12?

hy guys!
i will like to know your opinion about this....here in romania we start do not use r 12 from 2 yrs,but the small compressor with which we work have inside mineral oil...it will work those compressor with r 134 if we don't replace the mineral oil with the poe oil?

r134a requires POE oil, it doesn't mix with mineral oil. There are blends though that work with mineral oil in r12 systems, like sp34e, plus some 40x refigerants.

For R12 replacement i would use R413A (Isceon R49)

That's the r4xx refrigerant I was trying to think of. Unless it comes under a FX name, I've never used it, though isceon rings a bell).
In australia we pretty much stick to sp34e. Must be because its cheap and easy to get here, as it's just 97% r134a, with 3% propane to mix with the oil.

To replace R-12 use 80% R-134a and 20% R-600a

There was a lot of large plant A/Cs at an air force base I worked at with r12 and r500 refrigerants. We had to change them to r134a, FX56 and FX57. Back then there wasn't much choice of drop in refrigerants.
The R134a was a disaster, lots and lots of oil changes, and heaps of leaks suddenly appeared on 30 year old joins. Also the crank case seals on open drive compressors started to fail, so we tried fx56 and fx57 with better success.

The Drop in Replacement for R12 is R409A
