How come halfords are able to sell refrigerant in disposable cans - I thought they were banned.

On the same lines, why can I go to my plumbers merchant, buy a can of pipe freezer and blast it all off to the atmosphere?

Not yet.

According to the F Gas Regulation, (842 / 2006 EC), it applies from July 4 2007. (Article 9-1 and Annex 2).

Products that are manufactured before that date can be sold through the market, so expect to see some on sale for a short while after that date as existing stocks are cleared. (Article 9-2).

If it contains any HFCs, then it's the same rules.
In fact this application is a non-confined refrigeration use and the same date applies.

Most pipe freezer kits use CO2 N2 etc. or a mixture of natural gases. So there's no prohibition with these.

That reminds me, I must go down to Halfords and get one of those cans.

The aircon on the wifes car has gone off a little bit and I don't carry R134a any more.

Me too.

It'll be as rare as rocking horse-poo in a few weeks.

Hmm.. The stuff that I have on the van is made by Rothenberger. Just out of interest I passed some through my Automotive refrigerant analyser and it identified it as R134a

most of that stuff is just diflouro ethan (R-152a) or 1,1,2 tetraflouroEthane (R-134a)

The air dusters here are what I use for my home projects that need R-134a as it is cheap and no hassle to get them at the electrical hoby shop.
