A data logger is simply an updated version of a chart recorder. They take advantage of computer technology so a single logging device can accept various inputs.

Pocket Logger comes to mind. Boxcar... Supco....regardless, they all require a computer interface.

If you want to simply record temperatures, I would suggest the Supco device.

We've used the Onset "hobo" models extensively. They're pretty reliable and relatively cheap. Especially useful for demonstrating energy savings following retrofits. See http://www.onsetcomp.com/index.html for more info...

I almost bought the boxcar hobo. I have two pocket loggers instead. For the life of me I cannot fetch the manufacturer. What sold me on the pocket logger was that I could measure a/c voltage among all the other measurements.

But every sensor is an add-on. You can buy a Supco or Dynis temperature logger for under 50 bucks. They are dedicated loggers and will do only what they pretend to do.

When you get to Hobo or the pocket logger, you have a wide range of sensing capability that you just have to have as the price quintuples. The logger is the cheapest part in many ways.

Now, the interesting part is this: These loggers are less important than the sensors. I just discovered that I can hook up a pocket logger sensor arrangement to a CPC controller and not even need the logger, just the sensors.

So now I can skip the logger and watch it from the telephone with the controller on larger systems.

i checked out some of the units you guys recommended. i like the pocket logger but wow are those probes expensive! supco has one that will take one temp. reading with a thermocouple and one pressure reading for $280 with the software and probes. i think i will get that one. i only need it for those times when the unit trips out once a week but when you get there you can't find anything wrong. thanks guys.

Dan-

Is that "pocket logger" possibly a PSG brand? If so, I've been using them for several years now, and they are a fantastic logger. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination...

Not as much as an Einstein, though!

Not sure about the PSG.... but it is made by Pace Scientific.

It starts out cheap, but after you add the attachments you have a lot of tail wagging the dog, dollarwise.:) We have 3 of them and a full set of sensors: Discharge and Suction transducers, Amperage, Voltage, insertion probes and surface probes for temperatures.... and my favorite, the RH sensor.

HOBO H8 dataloggers are the ones i have been predominatly associated with... seem to do a relatively good job and appear to be fairly accurate in their details.

I have only seen one other type used when i did some work for my mates co. but i'm not sure of the brand, they were heaps smaller then the HOBO ones and looked like an oversized watch battery with plastic over it with a tab coming off it. the information was processed and looked simillar to HOBO.

RS Componants can supply you with 'Tiny talk' dataloggers. i bought 2 of them for simple temp recording. i got the two loggers and the programme for the PC for just under £100. its already got the company i work for £8K that a customer was holding from them. Bargain

I prefer to use almemo systems 2290-8
a realy handy datalogger with no limitation of sensors or parameters with real time display. Have a look at it.
