I assume you mean supermarket refrigeration?
If so, I would do supermarket refrigeration over commercial any day. There are very few GOOD technicians and opportunities abound.

However, if you really apply yourself, you can have great success in any field. Soooooooo do what you want to do! Don't be afraid, just jump in!

In my oppinion the is no difference between commercial fridge and suppermarket fridge.
A fridge is a fridge is a fridge.
You will get different experiences but they are all rellevent to the trade. I can't speak for the US but in England we do
Specialise in the different disciplines such as Domestic refrigeration, Commercial refrigeration, Industrial refrigeration and Air cond. The domestic side is done by small companies and companies that deal with white goods. Most commercial companies do both fridge and air-cond and then there is industrial. The disciplines do cross over. Refrigeration companies do both fridge and air cond work. There are companies that specialise in only supermarket and others that only do industrial but for the most part refrigeration engineers in the UK </ST1:pcan turn their hand to most aspects of the trade.
The one difference though is the difference between service and install. Most companies do keep install work and the service side separate. That is not a blanket cover all statement for all companies because smaller companies do all disciplines.

This is not completely true....

Domestic engineers will only really do domestics but can also turn their hand to commercial quite well.

Commercial engineers can't really do domestics (for some reason!!) but will do anything from commercial upwards, even try some industrial.

Air-con engineers can only do air-con... nothing else (proven here several times)

Industrial engineers.. (I don't know any so I can't say)

Supermarket engineers can work on the most, they come across everything, every day.

Obviously there are a few exceptions but this is moslty the case.

Chillin:) :)

My experience is from a small company to large company and incuding industrial. I worked for companies that do domestic and I did domestic for a good ten years. I also did commercial fridge and some light industrial work. I thenmoved to a company that did all discaplins for comercial, industrial fridge and air cond. Most of the engineers I know are of a simular mix. Maybe I have been spoiled by my experience.
I do agree about the supermarket side though, They do work on a lot of kit and thefore do tend to be multi discaplined.
Cheers taz.

You're in L.A, who are you going to work for will make a difference. Source is large and independent , but will pay caca to start and throw you to the dogs right away (good or bad, depends on you). Southwest is also independent and the owner is a real good guy from what I hear from old GHV guys. The OEM's are union and pay pretty well (though right now they're out of contract).

Be prepared for long days (my longest is 31 hours;)),
late to football games,
late to dates,
late to recitals,
late to being late.
But this job is so f'in rewarding, to me ,it's worth it.

Check arcamca.org/index.htm if you're in SoCal.

I'm Industrial:)

I have three Supermarket engineers working for me. What I do is train my own engineers:) I take senior supermarket engineers and spend three years training them up to the level required for Industrial Fridge. Having said that my guys also look after specialist phamaceutical which would include VRV kit, close control rooms and large packaged chillers. So they get a real mix:) One day a 1mW ammonia chiller, next day a VRV.

I would say the supermarket guys are very good at controls, but not much cop at overhauling a large screw compressor:D but given three years they get there:D

Kind Regards Andy:)
