Hell, No!! You need to charge that old dog with R-401b (mp66). Has the suction vibe been changed to stainless?? Some of the last R-500 carriers came out with stainless suck vibes so you might be ok. If it does have the cloth vibe....... who cares...... . You don't have to change the TXV either, it works really well with the R-401b. R-22 will be too high of pressure, the TXv will get all screwed up.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi tcc
As reefermadness said don't use R22 in place of R500,
The pressures are near to R12 and R134a, Where R22 pressures are very high.
I had used R12 in an old Carrier A.C unit and it worked fine,
but now a days may be you will have problem to get R12.
For R134a old oil will be not compatible and needs to be replaced.
As you are in states why not try to visit ICOR www.icorinternational.com they have developed refrigerant named HOT SHOT which can be used as a replacement of R500,R12 and R134a.

Just use R-401b. R-500 runs slightly colder than R12....and so does R-401b. Its the factory recommended replacement for R-12 and R-500 reefers in transport. The oil is compatible......

Sunbirds are geting very old. There are lots of parts that aren't even available any more.
