preheating fuel with exhaust gas in ship

I want to research about preheating fuel diesel with exhaust gas in ship. I think it can be efficient in combustion process. But i still confuse about heat transfer both fuel and exhaust gas, and what the effect of treathment in engine and fuel it self?

Using the engine jacket cooling circuit may be easier to attempt.

A simple plate heat exchanger could make this possible, as long as the engine water pump can accomodate the additional pressure loss of the plate heat exchanger.
