Hi richard,
i currently look after 8 grasso's on R22, all around 20 yrs old and very rarely have problems.
I carry out a top end inspection + oil & filter change at 5000hr intervals.
At 10,000hrs i carry out a complete stripdown e,g top end + pistons out + inspection of loading gear + oil pump etc, etc,
if your want more detail i could send you some pages from the service manual.
Regards,
Karl

Sorry i didnt't read your question properly first time, its monday and been a hard day!:D
i would say 1-2 days for top end + oil & filter & 3-4 days for a major.

Is that for all 3 per visit?
What does a major involve btw??

Richard,
which model RC11 RC9 RC5
Or the newer Grasso 12 10 and RC5
All have different schedules and top end overhauls vary with the number of cylinders.
As a guide an RC6-11 (6 CYLINDER) took me and my mate about 4 days to comply overhaul, including fitting a new thrust bearing wear face to the shaft (not an normal operation).
I could do a top end overhaul, oil and filter and a bottom end inspection on one of these in a day on my own, and still get home for tea
Kind Regards Andy:)

Cant see your picture.
The machines i was talking about are RC429's which are smaller than the RC11's Andy mentioned and the time stated was to carry out the work on one machine.
What does a major involve btw??
This is what we normally carry out, but have different sites with different routines
Top end strip down & inspection
Pistons out, strip down piston assembly inspect big & small ends
strip down & inspection of the loading mechanisms
strip down & inspection of oil pump
Shaft seal replacement
oil & filter change
cleaning of suction & intermediate(if installed) strainer
check end float
strip down & inspection of safety overflow valves
gapping of piston rings
strip down & inspection of oil pressure regulater

Hi rbartlett, On this site we have 8 RC 11 9 cylinder units pumping Ammonia and we get 4 to 5 days to do a full service on a unit, but thats with all the spare parts in stock in the stores. The only part that is not removed is the Crankshaft, all the shell bearings, bearing bush's,loading gear, pistons, valves and cylinder liners are striped down cleaned and checked and replaced as needed.

looks like a 6 clyinder RC9, i find them nice easy machines to work on.
one thing though, if it still has the old type locking tabs on the big end/conrod bolts they can be awkward to get off as they are a small plate which has been bent once the bolts are tight to lock the nut in place, as the crank case access holes are quite small the plates can be a pain to get off.
for the last few years a serated washer aragement has been used, much easier to fit/remove

So basically on a minor I should just to a look see and a major maybe oil change + top end. Anything past that is extra as regards maintenance wise as it seems it's an running hr thing?
so
3 minors = 3 day s
1 major=2 days
5 days for these 3 comps ?? +10k overhaul (if needed)
Cheers
Richard
