Guys,

The final decision is coming and I have 2 options.
1) Electrical Storage heaters
2) ground source heat pump + fan coils (the pipes for the water are already installed)

Not sure wich one will cheaper...

My question is can any geo heat pump be used to heat the water for the fan coil? how efficient (cost/benefit) are the geo pumps compared with the air source ones?

Do you recommend any brands for the pump and for the fan coils?

PS: any software or website that will allow me to compute the heating needs for the house? all commercial websites and quotes I have give me quite high values (19kw - 20kw), and the house only has 200 sqm.

thanks.

Hi Eagleeyes
GSHP is more energy efficient than electrical heater but need more initial cost. You can compare it by a detailed calculation:). It's not easy to say which is cheaper.
The heating load 19~20KW is a normal value. The exact value depends on your house envelop structure and material. The well insulated envelop can reduce the load down below 50% of normal value.

only for your ref.

Thanks for your help!!!

Just to finish it, can any geo heat pump be used with the fan coils? Can geo pump work with normal water radiators? if not can any other heat pump work?
how efficient (cost/benefit) are the geo pumps compared with the air source ones?

Thanks a lot again...

It only has 200 sqm!?
If it's well isolated, then you can count with 50 W/cubic meter. So, 200 x 2.4 height x 50 gives indeed +/- 20 kW.
You may not install less, otherwise you will have troubles during the cold days when you need the heat teh most.

Common radiators can be used but the biggest benefit will be if you can select them with a low water temperature 40°C/30°C.
So, you have to size them a lot larger.

Placing fan coils like you suggested is a very good solution: heating goes much faster, they're smaller and you can use them also to cool your house in summer, which isn't possible with static radiators.

Direct heating is allways expensive, in Belgium even very expensive unless you can store the heat during the night.

GSHP are much more effetcive (the heat source is more stable, especially when you need it the most) then the air side ones but they're also more expensive.
The ground is also the best medium to condens during summer.

If you ask me, install a GSHP, much more reliable and cheaper if you calculate everything over 20 years.

Best brand, I shouldn't know it look once for Climatemaster,
Viessman, http://www.viessmann.co.uk/products/renewableenergy/heatpumps/
Masser ( http://www.masser.be/nl/warmtepomp.htm in Dutch buts some pictures) Nordic http://www.nordicghp.com/mg/nordic_heat_pump.htm

Dimplex http://www.dimplex.de/english/products/heatpump/ and especially this link will bevery usefull for you http://www.dimplex.de/english/downloads/handbooks/PHB_Waermepumpe_2002_Englisch.pdf
