Interesting research into skill gap

Just read a survey by the Institute of refrigeration
and it has some interesting conclusions, if not unexpected.

"Both graduates and apprentices entering the sector
showed skills gaps across a range of 45 individual skills.
These included core skills and principles such as identifying
and solving engineering problems, testing & commissioning,
acting with professionalism and integrity and designing systems
to safety constraints."

Sadly it does come down to a simple fact I think.

Experience comes with time/practice.

[Edit] Should add of course that it also comes from a good tutor.

It also comes from having a professional attitude in the first place and not just attending college because they have to.

The current City and Guilds exam regime does not help either - I have plenty of apprentices who go in to an exam and simply guess the answers and yet still pass.

I know for a fact that there are apprentices who complete all of their exams and yet still do not know basic facts.
