Hi all

Hoping you can help point me in the right direction please as I don't have much experience with water chillers.

I was called out to a set of chillers which have water cooled condensers which are fed from a cooling tower. The chillers are tripping out on HP. The flow seems to be fine but I noticed that the chiller closest to the water pump had colder water going in than the next along. I then found a high point in the water pipe and opened and purged loads of air. This helped with the water temperature but the second chiller is still tripping out.

I think there is still air getting in. My question is how do you find the air leak, I'm guessing on negative pressure side? Any other pointers to check?

By the way the water pressure gauges throughout don't work so bit tough to test.

Thanks for your help

Carl

Hi Carl
A bit more information is required,
What is the water temp?
Are there any strainers on the water lines?
Are there water regulating valves fitted (these are the type controlled by discharge press)?
Is the cooling tower working properly?
What is the load on the chillers, has it changed?
There could be air in the condensers, water side.
There could be partial blockage in condensers.
There could be non-condensables in the systems.
If you suspect a leak you have no option but to shut the chillers down and check.
Regards
Paul
