View Full Version : Air conditioning unit in small high-rise apartment

Thinking of getting air conditioning for a flat abroad, where you can get 40 degrees in the summer and minus in the winter It's a small 2 bed apartment, 4 floors up. The unit would need to give out chilled air and heat. It's rented out occasionally to family and friends. I don't want the usual water output to a bucket on the balcony, as people, whoever well-intentioned, do forget to empty them, sometimes twice a day in the height of summer. Any thoughts?

The height is not too much of an issue with the majority
of the AC - Heatpumps on the market at the moment.

As for the water can it be fed to a rain water down spout
or do you have any potted plants nearby / Balcony flower bed
that would take the drain water?

Failing that a small pump would pump the water out of the
way to the nearest drain point.

Also, is it feasible for one unit in the hall to circulate chiiled and heated air through to the other rooms please? It's a very small 2 bed apartment.

A condensate pump in/by the AC indoor unit will pump out the condensate via a 1/4" plastic hose, this hose could go in to a bathroom or kitchenette.
One indoor unit for multiple rooms is generally a no go but if you are lucky you can get away with it if the layout of the rooms/doors is just right. Generally you would have the indoor unit in the most critical room blowing towards the doors to the other rooms.
In my house I got one wall mounted indoor unit serving the whole hose but... I do have open stairs with the living room just below and 3 bedrooms with their doors of one wall on the upstairs landing. My AC unit is on the opposite wall to the doors and with a straight air path to the downstairs living room. It is not ideal but it just about works and each bedroom have individual temperature control (i.e. if you want cold/hot air in to your bedroom you leave the door open, if not you close the door). The AC itself is just looking at the temperature above the stairs so it is a compromise.

As I said, it is all in the layout of your flat.
If you have a room large enough to allow your AC unit to run without cycling ON/OFF all the time, if there is direct airflow to the other rooms.

I guess it would be a lot more expensive if it was cycling on and off all the time? As mentioned, it's to go in a hall.

It takes years of training Chris....wasn't trying to be pedantic, but without the information on what your flat needs, we can't really give you a heads up on which option of equipment that you are asking us to advise on.

Like you, we would be guessing.

The best advice I can offer is for you to get a couple of quotes from local companies that have been established for a number of years. If they have a few years trading under their belt then more than likely, they know what they are talking about.

consider a ceiling cassette unit in the general living area that has a take off port to supply bedrooms . Under cut doors for return air.
But you will need a ceiling cavity above for cassette and ducting.

In an apartment I go to in Spain they have similar setup. It just about copes and the unit is installed on the in the lounge/diner middle wall opposite the very small (1m squared) hallway that has both bedrooms and bathroom off from it. Air flow is directed towards this area and with the doors open the bedrooms have the edge taken off them. Usually a floor fan in the hall area helps to further increase the air flow into the bedrooms.

On an evening though to get the bedrooms pleasant enough to sleep the set point has to be lowered in the lounge to the point it is actually cold to be in there, this allows enough cold air to get into the bedrooms.

If this was being done properly again I have suggested to the apartment owner to get separate bedroom units on a multi outdoor.
