Very basic question here as I never do these kind of things but if someone gave you the option of either 1 12kw split or 2 x 6kw splits in a single room what would you choose? Both Toshiba inverters

Choosing the size of a split system isn't always about making sure that it can handle the cooling load. You have to also consider the air distribution.

So if you had a fairly square room with a 12 kW cooling load then a cassette in the middle of the room may do it, but if you had a long thin room with a 12kW cooling load, then 2x 6kW cassettes may be the better option

Yeah makes sense I suppose it always depends on electricity usage a lot of the time too. Cheers mate

is this 2x 6kw indoors on a 12 kw outdoor or 2x 6kw systems- typically a cassette will have 4mtr airthrow so as frank says shape of the room is important- if its 9mtr x9mtr then 1 12kw cassette, if its 9mtr x 18 mtr then 2x6kw cassettes- maybe blocking the 2 sides that face each other- in this case 2 seperate outdoors may be better then if a wombat or gecko damages 1 outdoor you still have some cooling;)

Unlike Manchester where it would be feral cats and drug users :D

Did I ever tell the story of the drug user stealing R410A because he was told
it would give him a buzz.................

I would use two independent splits. If conditions are too hot for one, fire up the second. If possible, have the outdoor units wall mounted and separated. Way too many critters ( crawling, jumping or flying ) are attracted to ground mounted units.
Have a sparky hard wire them to independent Circuit breakers at your Meter box.:)
