Good day everybody. I don't know if you can help. I have just been to a imi Celler cooler.with a cu 50 2hp outdoor unit on r 22. Does anyone know what the expansion device is on these.it is about 10 years old.when it's running there is some sort of fitting on the liquid line after the drier just as it goes into the evaporator and it is frosting from there into the evaporator. Is this normal.cheers.

That's normal. It's called a bullet tube restrictor. There's a gauze to catch the crud then an insert with a small hole which is where liquid refrigerant expands. You might find a different size one taped inside the outdoor unit which gets used on the system depending where the device is and pipe run if I remember correctly.

Cheers,
Andy.

Remember, it's R22, so you can't touch it easily.

Hi andy.have you any idea of the refrigerant charge for these systems.pipe run about 15mtrs of 5/8 + 3/8 pipe

Not sure on that one, stick 2kg in the F Gas log book ha ha.

Think the idea is to fit the larger orifice by the outdoor unit if you have a longer pipe run and lag the 3/8" pipe or something along those lines at least.
Found the sight of those things seem to defy logic. Warm pipe one side, cold on the other, can't argue with the laws of thermodynamics though, all that crazyness going on in such a short distance.

Cheers,
Andy.
