My parents have a 10 year old Zanussi Frost Free Fridge Freezer. (fridge on top)
For the last six months, It has had the above fault. Ice Cream is not frozen and the fridge section is too cold. They are replacing it anyway, however always on the lookout for a bargain, If it can be fixed simply I will save it from the dump.

It sounds to me like there are 2 problems....

1) cold control might be defective, and
2) the freezer fan might be running too slow.

It sounds like the defrost heater could be permanantly on!

Do you have any service history?

Have you adjusted any air flow vents? Has the fan been replaced before this started happening?

You say the freezer is on the bottom and cooler on top... so you are getting colder air at the top. If the defrost heater were energized continuously the refrigerator section would get warm also. It could be the temperature control is sticking and causing the system to run continuously and freezing the coil up so there is very little heat transfer in the freezer section yet the fan is pulling some cold air off the iced coil... but I doubt it because the upper compartment would eventually warm up too. Does the refrigerator section have a humidity plate that runs around the walls near the top? (And with that last question I have to wonder if this unit has an evaporator coil assembly in each section? as I am not familiar with that brand...)

Fridge might have two compressors. One for the fridge, one for the freezer.
Fridge side, thermostat most probably faulty
Freezer section, coil may be iced over, or defective fan
