View Full Version : Buffer Tank size for Glycol

Hello Everybody,
Greetings to all.

I need to know how to calculate the size of buffer tank for propylene glycol (35%).
here are my system details.

It a an ammonia/glycol plant, glycol is used for food processing
total system capacity is 2850 kW,
glycol in/out is -3/-8,
buffer time 10 min (or anyone expert here can suggest)

it would be helpful if anyone can send the procedure to calculate with explanation or post it down here.

10 mi buffer time is very common and usually gives good control. Only ensure that the cold glycol overflows on to hot side in case of hot and cold well system. I.e. the primary glycol flow should be more than the secondary glycol flow.

Also estimate total system volume and see whether entire Glycol charge can be accommodated in the tank. Especially when the plant is stopped there is possibility of pipe lines emptying in the tank.

In the glycol storage silo put in a partition weir plate down the centre to get cross flow effect

Thanks for info.

How can I calculate the size of tank.
I found somewhere, 7-10 lts per kW, will that be sufficient for 10 min buffer.

Estimate pump flow in lph. Divide this by 6 you will get volume.
