2079 is valid today and will be for the foreseeable future.

They would only change / update the qualification if the law
changed or if new refrigerants were invented.

New refrigerants have been invented and the EU have changed
the law. Things changed in January this year but C&G included
the changes into the existing 2079, so no update in required.

You would be wise to get up to speed with the new changes
because it does effect the way we work and it effects the way
we measure the inspection periods.

But as to your question, no C&G will not be changing the 2079
for a while now and if you have the 2079 you will be good for
the foreseeable future, the same as everyone else who has it.

The CITB J11 is different but they make no excuses and they
insist that the qualification is updated every 5 years.

So if wholesalers sell refrigerant to people without certification they are breaking the law,I know Rob that the reputable ones won't because I deal with a shared interest between us,and can b and q halfords etc still sell refrigerant b and q selling pre charged systems and halfords selling diy car ac gas are they exempt?

.

I know that the bigger wholesalers who have branches
throughout the UK are trying to comply. I know that because
the request for 2079 qualifications has gone though the roof since
November last year. It is surprising how the threat of being
unable to buy the parts (let alone the refrigerants) encourages
companies to comply.

I know that it is now illegal to sell non hermetic systems to people
who are not registered and I know that the bigger wholesalers
are for the most part enforcing this.

I also now of companies (individuals) who have been approached by
people and offered cash money for refrigerants and split AC systems.

So, are all the wholesalers complying? I don't know, but most are and
I know that a hugh amount of effort has been put in to ensure it
works properly and is honestly enforced.

Does that mean everyone will be totally legit and above board?? I hope
so but I do live in the real world and I'm sure there are ways around it
both legally and illegally.

Similar legislation kicked here Jan 01, for purchase of refrigerant. Witnessed a stand up argument this morning of a split installer cowboy wanting buy refrigerant. No sale.

Well I for one will not buy from wholesalers who do not comply, and as for selling gas to people without registration no won't do it your right Rob people will find a way around it my 2079 was taken in 2011 so what on earth was in the minds of the folk who thought 2015 was light years away,to be fair watching people buy gas nitrogen from wholesalers without proof that they could even think straight annoyed me I hope it's strictly enforced for the good of our industry.

Interesting point made there Magoo!
I must of been sleeping, you say that you too have similar legislation that has kicked in?
And here's me thinking the UK and Ireland were having to comply to more and more!
I have not heard from our other EU colleagues on this, Yet!
It would be interesting to here how things are on the continent?

Australia have the Artick licence for purchase of refrigerant, more of a union thing. Job protection thing. They also had horrendous carbon taxes as well which seem have gone out the window with change of Government. But they Knighted the Duke of Edinburgh though.

Magoo, would not say it was a job protection thing, just a way of controlling the use or refrigerant.
Started when they discovered ozone layer deteriorated etc.
Prior to that anyone could buy it for car aircon etc.

Our Prime minister was heavily criticised for the Knighthood amongst other things.

Probably been ren said many times, you need nothing to work on ammonia, only to be "adequately trained".

Ok on the point of supply of refrigerant supply, checked out two national wholesalers one said no certification no sale not even an a/c unit which is precharged but parts no problem, the other said anyone can buy the refrigerant although he was only the counter guy!But said he had been told no different? Guess it's not being enforced would have thought national companies would have been on the ball,oh the one that lays the law down is good on price too.

Spoken to a few people who have had trouble with electrical suppliers with a similar problem, refusing to sell them cable etc without an electricians JIB/equivalent card.
