This fridge is actually freezing but before i go and change the thermostat, it is also making a low frequency hunting noise. Is this sign of something more serious or is it just because it is having to work extra hard because of a failed thermostat

sounds like the compressor is running into a vacuum due to the low temperature it is running at. Suggest you fit a new stat asap before the compressor cooks itself to death br Glenn
