I currently have a 5.45 x 3.25 meter walk-in freezer running on a Copeland 4HP Discus Compressor with room temp set at -20 Centigrade. I was wondering if I could add another condensing unit and evaporator to reach -35 or -40C so I can convert the storage freezer into a blast freezer during the times that I need to do so. Is this a practical solution to both financial and space constraints? The panels are 4 in. polyurethane.

Hi rickmor,

The cooling capacity of the existing system will considerably decrease when you operate it at lower evaporating temperatures.

By simply installing an identical compressor/evaporator you are only doubling that smaller capacity. But, this does not take into account the actual capacity requirements of the blast freezing operation.

The cooling load for the blast freezing operation should be verified by calculations to determine if the second unit will be sufficient.

A double stage compressor will probably be required, being the suction vapor pressure so low at -45° Te..
