Thought I would show someone's ingenious way of cleaning compressor sump sight glass while it is running from the inside.

Absolutely priceless.
I assume that's for a mineral oil system?
Synthetics have a scouring agent within them.
But clever engineering application all the same.

Do you think I should leave it in?

Ok, that is clever!
I'd leave it in if it's sealing ok.

Hi Ranger.
I would plum for reinstating as it should be. The reason is as I am sure you know, if your oil is in an acceptable condition.
You should have problems reading the oil level!
If oil is being carbon'd up and the mod is necessary then the comp is not right in the first place.
The mod is coping with an issue instead of dealing with it I assume?
Ultimately the choice is yours my friend.

I would personally like to frame it & mount it on the wall in the workshop.
I think every time I passed it I would minimum smile, maybe even laugh occasionally.
I would have to find a spare side cover though.

Why the oil is so degraded not sure, as it's only on a packaged Vogt NH3 ice machine.

You are not wrong Ranger.
I am smiling now reading your thoughts!
I have not even come across a Vogt, so cannot help with a cover.
The trouble with Black museums as we call them, is that you can end up with rather a lot.
Take a couple of good quality photos and blow them up to poster size and frame them.
You will achieve what you want and the other 2 dilemmas are sorted.

Someone had way too much time on their hands

If given more time they may have hooked up a windscreen wiper motor to make it auto clean.

Ok until the brush starts to break up.
