Had a number of debates (Read Arguments) of late regarding what is considered reasonable and what isn't. It's all unreasonable as far as I'm concerned if you can't pass costs onto a client.

It would be great a few of you could copy and paste info for comparison.

Travel Time Paid @ =
Overtime Rate Saturday =
Overtime Rate Sunday =
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00
Our of town allowance =
Meal allowance for 12 hour day =

To set the ball rolling here is hours which I personally consider more than reasonable but even this is getting the envelope pushed.

Travel Time Paid @ = Time and half outside 8:00 while 17:00 normal working day
Overtime Rate Saturday = Time and Half
Overtime Rate Sunday = Double regardless if worked Saturday or not
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00 = Double
Our of town allowance = Room paid plus £40
Meal allowance for 12 hour day = £15

Travel Time Paid @ = time
Overtime Rate Saturday = time and 1/2
Overtime Rate Sunday = time and 3/4
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00 time and a 1/2 if worked more than 8 hours
Our of town allowance = B+B
Meal allowance for 12 hour day = none unless working away from home then likely get sandwich in petrol station or similar.

When we got put on salary the only thing you got was B+B if staying away plus munchies.

Last major UK employer was:

Travel Time Paid @ = 1.5 less 1/2 an hour each end of the day.
Overtime Rate Saturday = 1.5 to midday, 2 after.
Overtime Rate Sunday = 2, but you had to have worked Sat unless access was only available on Sunday. Which basically never happened.
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00 Don't recall - that doesn't tend to happen in the A/C side of things. (As an aside, I worked for Linde for a while. They started the fixed salary system in the UK. It was calculated on an average of 55 hours per week as I recall, with compulsory rest time that varied according to the hour you got home. Iirc after 0200 you were off the whole next day. They still lost an ave. of 4 vehicles a year to engineers falling asleep at the wheel!)
Our of town allowance = less than 100 miles: you got paid travel time. 100miles plus: your option of travel time or staying away allowance. £75/night, all up.
Meal allowance for 12 hour day = none that I recall.

We also paid all our fuel, tolls, parking, etc. & claimed it back on expenses. When I joined you were issued a £300 float to cover this. By the time I left it'd gone up to £500 iirc.
Most of us got a supermarket loyalty card or credit card with good points & paid for everything we could on that. ;)

I take it these guys getting paid straight time for travel are on installs and not service engineers?.

I was a service tech. Paid door to door.
For the local firm if an install was local then had to travel in our own time as the boss had to cut the prices a bit to win jobs and didn't want to lose out on his share of the profit. Well, my interpretation anyway. :-)

Things aren't great in the economy at the moment, lots just feel happy to have a job, but I think it's important to watch for companies taking the pi$#. I'm sure a lot of guys will remember who turned them over when things pick up and there are better t&cs available to them elsewhere. Where I am just now my fixed overtime rate isn't even time and a half when my salary is broken down to an hourly rate. Pretty sure nobody's salary has increased inline with inflation. Makes my blood boil having to work a Sunday at this rate, especially for the ridiculous calls we get passed to supermarkets on 4hour responses that are never an emergancy.

we we need a union!.

Hi.
I'm just getting back into industrial refrigeration, had a couple of years out to make aeroplanes but these are my rates that I get paid.
Travel Time Paid @ = Time and half
Overtime Rate Saturday = Time and half
Overtime Rate Sunday = Double time
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00 = Double time
Our of town allowance = Haven't done this yet
Meal allowance for 12 hour day = £10
Callout = £130 per week - £20 each callout + 4hrs min paid at time and half. On callout were paid min 4hr block, and each 4hr paid the same. So if I work 5hrs on a callout I get paid 8hrs.

Hi

I work in the retail sector ( supermarkets) mainly Water Chillers, CO2, and Large packs.

Travel Time Paid @ = single after 0530 before 0000 double between 0000 and 0530, 1.5 Saturday and X2 Sunday
Overtime Rate Saturday = 1.5 until 1730 then double
Overtime Rate Sunday = double
Overtime Rate Midnight till 8:00 = Double until 0530 then 1.5 until 0830 then single
Our of town allowance = No need to leave London
Meal allowance for 12 hour day = 1 hour unpaid Lunch time everyday - Whether you want it or not.

We do have unlimited overtime available so it is easy to you 70K per year if you want to put the hours in.

Judging by what others are saying we have it pretty good , I can't understand why we still struggle to find engineers
