To check timer with ohm meter do you take readings across 3 and 4 and also on automatic defrost timer I had voltage to defrost heater but no heat was being generated would the problem be the defrost terminating thermostat could be open?

Defrost timers work differently.

But in general they tend to be a 2 pole switch. Switched in
one direction they run the refrigeration circuit, switched in
the other direction they run the defrost circuit.

Your question is a bit vague but you would expect to see
the timer to switch and the connections need to be correct.

Voltage measured or testing the continuity (with power disconnected)
should show you if it is working or not.

We don't know :p

If you have voltage to your heater, is the heater OK?
If you have voltage to your heater, is there a neutral?
If you have voltage to your heater, do you have voltage through the defrost termination?

Vague answers to a vague question :)

How do you know that you have voltage to the heater?
How did you measure it?
Having one end at voltage higher than ground and another not conected to anything, doesnt mean that you have "voltage" to the heater, since heater only works at voltage diferential.

You could check if you have continuity through the heating element to prove the heater.
