Hello... I'd like to learn more about heat pumps - both air and water source. I'm looking for a good manual that goes through the thermodynamics.

I'm not interested in learning so much that I can design a cooling system. I want to get a working feel for the fundamentals. For example, let's say I want to use the domestic water supply as a heat sink for a hypothetical water source heat pump cooling setup. I'd like to know how many gallons per day of 20 or 30 degree water this system is likely to use. What's my COP going to be at various heat sink temperatures? Things like this...

Or alternately... Is there some sort of open source Calculator out there where you can plug in variables and it estimates performance? That would also work for me.

Google is as good a reference source, as any.
