Hello everyone I'm new here. Not to new to HVACR but something strange happened yesterday on a walk in. Call was breaker tripping once in a while to every time it tried to start. So I went up hooked up the ole amp meter and it cycled 4 times everything going well. Was about time for it to start pulling down and then comp shut off tripped breaker and at same time pulled LRA @ 76Amps. Anyone ever seen this??

Time to replace the compressor, but before you do it, check motor protection and contactor.
If it is a single phase, could also be a problem with start capacitor.

.

I've seen it happen when the compressor is seizing up.

What is causing it to seize is what you will have to find out.
It could be the oil, the bearings, the seals, the windings or it
might just be on its way out.

76 amps is indicates it's a fair size comp so maybe it might be worth
a strip down and have a look inside?

Had a problem with it tripping the breaker weeks ago but it was only tripping about once a week. On my first call to the unit I noticed they used to have delta red leg 3ph up there. Someone change out the comp and just wired everything up solely for single pH but was also using the stinger leg which was 240v. At that time I noticed the unit was just hard starting and tripping on start up I added a hard start but continued to trip about once a week. But like I said it tripped on LRA while running this last time. I plan on whatching it again today. I forgot to mention as did the owner to me, that the comp was a used comp some guy gave him a so called good deal on.
