I didn't see an arrow or the word TOP on it so I figure it doesn't mater. What say you?

Well, I did a quick search on Google and most of them said " multiple mounting positions" then I found this - so now I'm not sure http://relays.tycoelectronics.com/datasheets/38_Series.pdf

Yes, potential relays are position sensitive. Each must be calibrated for the position it's to be used in. By installing one in an incorrect position, you risk, altering the Pick up and Drop out voltages.

Hi,
P.relays usually sit in the upright position they are gravity assisted to switch over from start to run, lying them down (connections at the top) inhibits the cross over, causes the relay to stay in start position thus burning out the start windings.

depends on make of relay
for instance copeland oem relay is position sensitive but an aftermarket such as mars is multi positional

usually the cheaper relays are position sensetive which is the reason compressor manufactures love them

This partiular relay came with a Danfoss factional hp. ( no markings) with a start cap and run cap.

I didn't know potential relays sensitive to position. Dang, all these years. Seems most are mounted spade up, but I recall hundreds mounted on the back wall and at other tilts.

if it came with replacement comp than play it safe and mount it the way the old one is mounted

The old compressor only had a start cap w a cmr relay. The replacement has both a start and run cap with a potential all supplied by Danfoss. No mounting bracket or instructions will have to make something.
