What an odd question, especially on a forum for HVACR...

However, as we are generally a knowledgable bunch. Here goes:

It will vary from ship to ship but the Nimitz Class, generally accepted as the largest carriers, started of with USS Nimitz (AKA Old Salt) commissioned back in -75 with a displacement of 100,020 tonnes and ended (?) with USS H.W. Bush (AKA Avenger) commissioned -09 with a displacement of 102,000 tonnes.

In comparison, Spain's Juan Carlos I weighs in at a tiny 27,079 tonnes and the new Chinese carriers are estimated to come in at around 65,000 tonnes.

I hope this answered your question...
(Yes, displacement = weight)

On the point of Aircraft carriers.

They cannot get any bigger than they are now!
In fact no ship will probably be built bigger than the biggest ships now!

Reason is the Panama Canal.

Aircraft carriers and biiiiiggggg ships can't be bigger than the locks on the Panama Canal.

At the moment they only have a few feet spare on each side.

I just thought I'd throw that in..........

That's why they are widening it as we speak Rob.
The panama canal is loosing revenue, so it is being widened to accept larger vessels.

The best part of the Nimitz class is the Westinghouse pressurised water reactors 104 MW of power :)

Must have some hell of a cooling plant, that'll add a lot of weight to the Carrier..

And when carriers go to war mode, then can get really heavy, they carry 50% more aircraft, 50% more crew, fully loaded with Jet fuel, more amourments and munnitions, more provisions coca cola and condoms , travel with and escort fleet of average 10 vessels and can hit 40 knots, stay in blue water areas. Does pay to stay out of there way.

Not always true.

USS Enterprise

This is the transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995.

Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS ENTERPRISE,THE LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Typical bird brained Yanks. :)
