An owner of a dress shop calls me, he says his AC , cassette , at certain times emits this foul smell from his ac

( in heating mode)

The only thing I can think of is that it may have a fresh air duct fitted and this is picking up some smells from, an outside source

He says next door is a fish and chip shop

Any thoughts?

Sometimes this is caused by perfume !
Chemicals condense on evaporator when run in cool mode and burn off when in heat mode - smells like cat pee
Try washing evaporator - good luck

I never would have thought of that

It figures all right, the women who frequent this shop are dressed to the nines and full of Oriental , Eastern perfume

Maybe you may be right

Remember Abe when you are cleaning filters that we all change our skin once a month.

Where do you think all those spare flakes of skin end up ?

So the accumulation of general dust, shop cleaning materials, perfumes, deodorants and bits of skin add up to quite a c*cktail to settle on the fan and the coil.

Don't forget your facemask when you're doing the coil clean.

We had this in a jewellers in bath. After about 2 months of running he phoned to say it stank.. We were completely baffled and repeated returns revealed nothing.

The manufacturer (mitsi) even visited and couldn't see any reasons. then by sheer co-incidence the customer mentioned that years and years ago it was a perfumery. It turned out that the a/c was dragging 100 years of smells out of the very fabric of the building.

The best we could do was stuff the intake grill with a activated charcoal filter...which we would change every other month.

Cheers

Hi Abe,
There is a bacteria that grows inside the Mitsu units it forms when the indoors are very dirty and when the Unit goes to heat the high temperatures cook the bacteria this usually smells like dirty cats. If this is the case strip and clean the drain pan there is also a strip of foam that is stuck to the bottom of the evaporator coil. its about 10mm square and runs around the bottom of the coil it stops the fins scratching the drain pan. Remove this as this is where the bacteria grows. This is a very common problem with the Mitsu's

Hi Abe

Have a look at this site - good coil cleaners here.

They are available at NRS (Climate Centre) among others.

We find the Envirocoil to be good for this problem.
