HI kefah
Very good advice here & I would like to add that I use the above along with AVG Free. I normally safely download these free softwares from filehippo.com

I have found the best way to keep my computer safe is to lock the room when the grandchildren come. Last time they were here thay played on my computer, all my things got moved around and it got a virus from the internet and 2 week later I received a warning letter for illegal downloading pop songs.

That will do, but there might be other ways to ensure the safeness and good run of our personal computer or desktop. Make sure to not download things or software that you are not totally aware of, also updating your pc would also do good.

My recipe for safe and quick PC!
Install Linux Ubuntu and use it for your daily surfing e-mailing etc... (or simmilar user frendly distribution like Linux Mint Cinamon which looks and feels simmilar as Windows for ease of transformation) in dual boot configuration, and enjoy your porn :) or whatever draws viruses to your PC, but now completely immune to viruses. Second, use Windows offline only, and only for software otherwise unavailable for Linux.
In Linux install antivirus to check for files you planing to use in Windows later (linux actualy does not need AV). In Windows instal Firefox and NoScript Ad-on, and beware what you allowing to run on sites you visiting while you on-line (avoid to be on-line on Windows platform).

Fast and safe if you using both worlds!

For Linux you need about 20-30 GB of free space on HD!

Anything with a chip is vulnerable... Consumer level protection only does so well. Even the best ones miss a lot or have trouble getting rid of corrupted code. CCleaner is a good program, though, for cleaning up the much. Spybot S&D used to be a lot better. If you're into porn.... better use a computer that you don't care about having it hacked.

You will hear people saying "our computers are safe." For the most part, unpopular OSes or low volume OSes are indeed "safe" (in quotations purposely). That is because there is little profit in hacking them, since nobody really cares about your daily surfing habits except for your ISP (who will save and sell that information).

If everybody converted to Linux, suddenly Linux would need an AV. ;)

Just something to consider, that every computer in some way is vulnerable. Best protection? Don't store tons of personal data on it. A file that says "Passwords?" AV or not, that's foolish. ;)

Think about it, companies that are paying millions of dollars to protect data are being hacked. Your consumer level software is a joke to a hacker. The focus has shifted to large databases that have high dollar information.

install ccleaner.com (free version) reboot your machine and run the program

scan and remove temporary files

scan and fix registry errors

tools>startup

disable everything

Tools>Startup>Browsers

Disable everything

Download revo uninstaller

uninstall all unused apps

run windows update again and reset

... keep running update and resetting until there are no more updates

Best way to keep your pc running smooth do not install to much bloat ware , make an external backup to external usb drive with acronis true image or similar on a regular basis . Note many over the counter laptops and pc's come packed with bloat ware eg norton and so forth ever wondered why you paid a heap for a new quad laptop that runs like a 486 . Don't be tempted to run multiple antivirus malware software at once ( school boy error ), run a diagnostic like speccy ( free ) check your temps and how much memory is free . Always check and clean out the dust aka bum fluff . ( Linux mint also a good distro X86 or X64 ) you can download avg rescue cd ( .iso ) or
Bitdefender rescue cd ( ,iso ) ( just burn .iso to cd with free burn software like imgburn ) both free these are bootable antivirus which means it will scan drives without loading windows , just set bios to boot from cd or boot menu option on boot . ( note can also be done from usb flash drive ) . moral keep it lean , keep it backed up .

Uninstall unnecessary programs and files. Debug. Defragment and clean your hard disk. Do not over use your pc. Clean it physically. I have my laptop for 3 years now and it is still working good!

I don't download a lot of unnecessary programs. I just have one anti-virus and I agree with Kath, I defragment and clean my hard disk all the time :)
