Direct connect with a laptop

I was after more information about connecting a laptop to an E2 or SC255 control, I have both programs loaded on this particular laptop but I need to know what cables are required. I don't have a 9 pin plug on the laptop so I was sure whether I needed a serial to USB plug for the e2 and for the danfoss I have been told several different ways it can be done.

You need a USB to serial port cable with a full cross over

For the E2 you need a crossover cable and need to change the static IP on the laptop to 10.10.10.2 and the IP on the E2 to 10.10.10.1 and then set the Ultrasite site IP to the same as the E2. If that doesn't work You may have to switch the IP's around to the laptop to 10.10.10.1 and E2 and ultrasite to 10.10.10.2 I can never remember which way it goes and get them backwards.
