How do I know if there is moisture in the system?How many different ways are there?

The ice makes a ping noise when it goes round the bends in the suction line.

Moisture will cause the oil to become acidic - an oil acid test kit will show how much. There is usually a temperature drop across the drier due to the moisture in it creating a larger pressure drop. Starved evap could be a symptom of moisture restricting the metering device.

One possibility not mentioned so far is monitor a trend with a Megohmeter as explained in Copeland’s bulletin 4-1294 (I know not the best method but it shoudl be counted!)

if you give the system a quick vac your sure to have lots of moisture in the system.
otherwise check the sight glass on the liq line to see if its yellow as opposed to sometimes green unless the sunlight fades it to a whiteish colour

If you suspect the exp valve is frozen up due to moisture present, try heat the valve body should clear the ice and you can hear the refrigerant flow again. Worked for me a few times.
