I have a bit of a problem with a commercial refrigerator on R12. It has a leak on it which I am going to repair this afternoon. However, the supply of R409a(FX56), which is what is used as R12 drop in over here, has now ceased.

I have a little bit left (approx 0.25Kg) which is not going to go very far. I have got tonnes of R134a but I will have to flush out the oil and replace it if I use that?

Does anybody know of a straight drop in refrigerant that I could use?

R49 is OK on fridges but don't use it on freezers unless you want to blow the compressor

I have seen R134 put in and work although in theory it shouldn't because of the oil.

Whats it been, 5 years since we lost R12 and we still have problems with drop in replacements. OH i look forward to 2012 when R22 goes as well

Thanks for that.

I acually managed to get some FX56 (R409a) this morning, so im good for now.

Just one quick thing. When I was looking at the refrigerant chart in the wholesalers yesterday, under R410a it says "drop-in replacement for R22" surely not?

Hi airefresco,

During the past few years, I have changed some units from r-12 to r-22.
Just check the capacity of the TEV and install a new compressor.
The size of the condenser should be ok.
An adjustment of the pressure controls is required.

New HCFCs are banned from 2010. Total use ban from 2015.

At this rate, HFCs will be gone in 2010, before R22., if the European Parliament have their way on Tuesday.
