View Full Version : Going to the store in a moment: What tool does reaming require?

Hello.

I am going to the store in a moment. What is the name of the tool that you use to wide the end of a copper tube like the following for brazing?:

8270
I need to know so I can at least check the price in the store, if it is a very cheap tool, i'll get it. Is it a necessary tool?

Sorry, I thought it was reaming for a second. Not reaming, just widening the end of the tube so I can fit another tube of the same size into it snugly. Not the flaring tool used for compression fittings.

good morning kompulsa- now hopefully u have a turbo torch, and a swaging kit, to carry out ur lil hobby, dont forget the nitrogen gauge and nitrogen, gauge manifold, vac pump, torr gauge and charging scales too,and also leak spray your gonna have to recycle ur copper collection to fund this-get a fire extinguisher too!

OK, don't forget the Digi-cool, (just ordered mine), the pipe stretcher, a bucket of steam and the propane powered circular saw. left handed monkey wrench.

lol.

I always was fascinated by air conditioning since I was a child, but didn't get the opportunity to actually do it until last year when I got an old window unit, but, I had no torch so I still couldn't do much until today. :)

sorry mike-i cannot give u more rep power,i have to spread the the rep between others- what age can they flare consistantly, and how long till they do pot changes

MikeHolm
06-11-2011, 11:32 AM
Flaring at age 7 (needed dexterity), pot changes not allowed till 10 (provincial regs:D)

GImmmeeee reps

Tut tut Mike
Soliciting for reps is frowned upon. And surely changing pots at 8 is ok.
But you scratch my back ,and all that .haha

I don't want to risk the fine ($200, last time I checked) letting a kid do a pot change at 8. He can barely lift it...haha

AH there's your mistake Mike
You should have started the kid in the gym and on the steroids at 4,He'd be slinging the pot's in by now.

No, the gym costs too much, i've got to get my moneys worth out of him so i have him mixing cement and replacing the tranny in the LT. Tomorrow I will have him re-roof my house.

I got the torch at the store yesterday and am improving already. I didn't burn up the tube nearly as much this time, and did the braze in less than 30 seconds this time, I will keep trying to minimize burning.

By pot, do you mean compressor?

install monkey
06-11-2011, 03:48 PM
yes the term pot is referring to the compressor- try heat shield mats or koolgel to reduce burning, otherwise reduce the flame on your new toy

Ok, I don't have nitrogen. Can I circulate R22 through it instead to prevent the corrosion then?

stufus
06-11-2011, 04:59 PM
No absolutely not burning R22 produces a nasty by product akin to phosgene .
Good for clearing the sinus and not much else.
Any agent used for purging must be inert.

I strongly suggest you undertake some formal training in these disciplines as this forum is not a school.
Some of these questions are ridiculous ,and a serious injury is only around the corner.
Do yourself a favour and get some training.

You'd be best to pressure with oxygen and get a nice flo of it for when your brazing, it would help a lot of new comers if you could video this and arrange someone to upload it here, in your absence

[Moderators edit]Newcomers please do not follow this advice without consulting your local fire department, insurance agent, emergency services and maybe your funeral director for good measure.

and O2 might be cheaper than nitrogen, not sure

Just make sure your insurance is up to date

One thing is for sure O2 will speed up the brazing Prosess

I'm guessing it was a joke.

I need to know the alternatives to nitrogen so I can finally start. I'm itching to.

Hi Kompulsa,

Some would call it a joke I suppose...
Nitrogen is the standard purging gas for brazing. Probably find other gases cost more but any inert gas would do I suppose.

Cheers,
Andy.

What I am seeing here is that purging during brazing is to displace oxygen which causes oxidation of the joint, which is what I thought: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:_bBM4iK-QG0J: (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:_bBM4iK-QG0J:www.copper.org/applications/plumbing/techref/cth/cth_7brzjts_purge.html+copper+purging+gas&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=jm)www.copper.org/applications/plumbing/techref/cth/cth_7brzjts_purge.html+copper+purging+gas&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=jm (http://www.copper.org/applications/plumbing/techref/cth/cth_7brzjts_purge.html+copper+purging+gas&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=jm)

That is the Google cache of Copper.org's page, the link is now broken so you can only see that cache page.

There is no oxygen in R22, so why can't it work instead of nitrogen? I have R22 already.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorodifluoromethane

I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorodifluoromethane) forgot to add that this is a temporary project, I am going to break it off within the next year anyway, so the joint does not need to last long, if that is the only concern...

Yeah, try r22, just try it.
Come back with the findings as none of us have ever brazed with a bit of R22 left in the system before, so we don't really know.

If you have to ask why you cant braze with R22 you shouldnt be brazing until you get some training..... as has already been suggested!

There's also no oxygen in propane but you wouldn't use that as a purge gas would you?
As already stated the gas must be inert which R22 isn't. Read Stu's post again mate.

Cheers,
Andy.

Good point Stu, might have created a monster!

An old supervisor of mine did some brazing on a Foster cabinet which used R600a. He steamed in (untrained I think) let the gas go, lit up the torch and promptly lost his eyebrows.
Shouldn't laugh but can't help it, even now.:D

Cheers,
Andy.

Kompulsa, do you really want to use an ozone depleting gas as a purge gas? It won't end well. Find an old fridgie and cry poverty. He may help you more than you could imagine.

In the early days - de-soldered a condensor that was still half full of R22  big green flame, eyes running like a river & sore throat for a week... obviously never done it since
