Nearly every forum I read has a thread like this. Sometimes it works out great for me or others to read about or listen to stuff we've never heard before.
This thread was partially inspired by the fact nearlt every forum I'm at has such a thread, and also due to a thread that's been deleted where I mentioned the spencer davis group. So I'm going to start with them and if anyone wants to add stuff, do so.

Be warned, if you don't, then this is going to be my blog documenting everything I listen to, and you're going to have to suffer through it :o

Steve Winwood joined the Spencer davis group when he was ~15-16, all these songs recorded before he was 19 (most when he was only 17).
What a voice for his age. Not bad for a Brummie, not bad for probably the best vocalist for the UK ever really. Right place at the right time, when the UK was getting into american blues/rock music and here's the perfect singer in the world right there to sing it, at only that young of age!

Yes the Spencer Davis Group was sort of a cover band, so I can understand why Steve Winwood wanted to leave and write his own stuff. But a part of me wished THAT voice recorded american/blues style music a little bit longer.

At the moment listening to a lot of The Jam and Paul Weller except the Style Council. Mind you it was Adele last week, Fook me that girl can sing ! I'm thinking Back in Black AC/DC for next week.
Doing air balancing this week so whatever gets me through the day ,it's monotonous stuff.

Hi Paul

For me its takes a lot to beat the wise words of the 'Boss' aka Bruce Springsteen
Every song has a story to tell
Four of his albums I can listen to back to back without a single song I dont like
Thats some going I think as most have a few on them that are a little poor

Funny you should ask that. ( not game to go advanced as currently holding onto R.E. coat tails. Site very unstable today). Why so funny? I've been making a vid collection of the past, as in rounding up as many songs that had significant values during various stages of life, so no one artist makes the dominant cut.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l35pI8QQPtA&feature=related

Since I'm 37 now, I have a soft spot for a lot of 90s bands, I grew up with them.
One of my favourite cruizy songs I heard a lot when driving while I was an apprentice was buffalo tom - summer

Oh really Paul h! Guess it's different strokes for different folks.
I haven't even really got started! Holding back for others to post because I like hearing different stuff that others may mention.
Listening right now to the MP3 that Plank posted. It's a one hour mix. I used to listen to a lot of electronic mixes, still listen to testo occasionally. I prefer the more ambient electronic music though, but I'm giving it a listen.

But yeah, I've got jazz, metal, ambient, electronica, alternative, industrial, rap, pop, power pop, rock and heaps of bands and genres to get to yet! :) Quite the few aussie/NZ 80s 90s bands I like. I love 'The Church' for example, and can't go past AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly etc
I've barely got started (I warned all of you)

I don't watch TV at all really. Nothing wrong with TV, I do get some good TVs shows on dvd or on my PC, and watch the entire series, and occasionally a movie (rarely). But life is too short to waste my time watching bad TV shows or any advertising.
Most of my spare time is spent listening to music while reading various forums on the 'net, unless I'm car tinkering or gardening.

You're only 49?
They build them different in QLD I guess.
I heard that type of stuff a lot, my 65 year old dad had music after all ;) And he loves movies made in the '60s. Kellys heroes and most of the war movies made in the 60s/70s were his favourites, and I liked them too.

here's another, BB king
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvCccp3qMX8

Why my varied taste in music?
Well years ago there was this little site called OINK. UK based and it was shut down a few years ago with the people running it arrested. But it was a torrent site you could download and listen to anything. It was a private tracker and you'd be banned if you didn't share a lot of music, so people uploaded anything and everything to keep their upload quota up. So I gave a chance to music I'd never heard of and would never buy and of course had no radio play.
It's a shame it's gone because I think I got a lot out of having access to heaps of different music I'd never heard of.

No problem.
Next time I'll come back with portishead, smashing pumpkins, radiohead, some syd barret era pink floyd, johnny cash and... gaudi.*

I think I listened to everything you didn't!
In the early 80s I heard lame pop music, by the late 80s I was into metal. So I skipped the entire big name american bands and musos in that era, and followed the alternative music scene from 90s onwards. When everything went crap (like radios started playing the band called 'live' and their ilk, or everything else was bad singers and rappers), I started listening to 60s and 70s stuff.
So all the big stuff like what you have posted and bruce springsteen, never stuck with me., I know it, but it just doesn't work for me, I'd rather listen to david bowie ( I love hunky dory), blues, jazz, proper rock, folk, electronica or some obscure 1990s stuff. Don't really like anything from the USA in the 1980s. Best music was from the europe or aus/nz in that time except for metal IMHO.

edit* Or I could go 1980s, XTC, talk talk, talking heads, peter gabriel, the cure, new order or Siouxsie And The Banshees...

paul_h
16-09-2011, 03:27 PM
I don't really listen to that stuff though. Syd Barret was their original singer before , well, drugs did him in.
Syd Barret era pink floyd was pretty different. It was more a normal psychedelic rock band in that era, with really crazy lyrics.

I'm a bit different. ;)
Not quite right in the head for someone who knows what they're doing, to be doing domestics and small units.
Quite a rarity some might say.

I delay jobs, and rise my prices, but everyone loves me because the alternative is a rip off and don't know what they are doing, so they all put up with me.

I'm over it though, next time I know not to try do it all on my own, it just doesn't work and I'm past the meltdown point. I need at least one other mech, need more large install experience ( I just did the basic install stuff, I've always been more a repair specialist), and I need someone to answer that constantly ringing phone (always a good problem to have, but I couldn't always answer it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwkA1ZAlQ8s

I love Mark Of Cain, a South Australian band, very much in the line of Henry Rollins - who I also love, and I think he may have produced this album.

If you're going to follow this thread, welcome to the crazy bus. It takes me out of places I shouldn't be in, but also takes me there sometimes.

Hey any of you like johnny cash?
Just before he died he made an album called 'when the man comes around'
Lots of it cover versions of 80s and 90s band, like nine inch nails, duran duran etc.
Here's the title song used in a TV series called 'Generation kill' great short TV series about soldiers in Iraq in 1991.
Song is used at the end when they compile film they've shot during the invasion and show to each other at the end.
In the show one by one they walk away not being happy with what they witnessed and saw in the 'movie' someone compiled.
Great album, great song, great TV series

Thanks for that Brian_UK. Good to see you join in. Also, R.E is quite stable here now though it was touch and go all of yesterday. Fleetwood Mac, with all the constant fighting they endured, really did deliver excellent music. Have many of their albums, back when there was no internet. Who's showing their age now?..Mike.

great band from the recent past.

They do a nice cover verion of "easy" too

I think mikeref should list to "easy" first though, the first link/song would scare him away!

Forgot to mention, also listened to Portishead "Glory box" today

Both bands are timeless, still sound contemporary even though 15 years old, so it would scare mikeref away for sure.
One thing I love about music, is that truly good stuff doesn't date.

Yeah I was a kid in the 1980s and listened to stuff like that.
By the late 80s listened to metalica, g'n'r, motley crue etc. Between them and listening to electronic music or bands like radiohead, in the mid 1990s, I listened to a lot of indy australian stuff around 1992-94.
Caligula's version of 'tears of a clown' I posted earlier, also stuff like The Cruel Sea, Nick Cave, You Am I etc. I'll leave them for later though.
Noticed you posted Jenny morris before, wasn't into that mainstream stuff like that after mid 1980s even if they were Australian, but I still did listen to heaps of Aussie music like the bands I just mentioned
Here's an australian golden oldy (if you were young in the late 80s :) ) for me, that many haven't heard of, Ed Keupper (from the 1970-1980s band The Saints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-GueNOKolo) )

Anyway 1992 song from Ed Keupper, The Way I Made you Feel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzIwfa67oSY

Funny how I've barely scratched the surface of what I can quickly dig up (and others as well), but I already feel like I never have to listen anything new or listen to ads on the radio ever again, for the rest of my life. Auto tune and talentless hacks **** me to tears!

One of my favourite bands, The Church
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q6nKP10j4s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Osz-GQbX37o

edit: And I love this song.
The triffids, wide open road
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSMF3h7LE2Q&feature=related

edit: Unbelievable!

Happy as a pig in muck.
You know how I mentioned ed keupper earlier, like a day ago, and just then 'the church' I looked up, after that there was a link to the triffids of a song I like, so I edited that in.
Well they are touring together this year. Those exact three bands, together!

Woo, real music, haven't seen it live for a long time.
What a coincidence though? Crazy combo my mind came up with that others thought it would be a good idea and they would tour together.

Yeah, last year I was a HUGE Mark Webber fan. He could have done it if he didn't stuff up in Korea!
Vettel is a machine, probably the best out there now. RBR went for good qualifiers as the car was built for aerodynamics, needed to lead not overtake in dirty air. Which is why Webber has been good for them, but Vettel is definitely a cut above, plus Webbers starts just suck, the bunny hopping learner driver kind of sucky start.
But this year, I want Button to at least finish 2nd in the championship, if Vettel has to win, at least Button can beat everyone else as I've given up on Webber. But like Webber, Button was a nobody until given a decent car.

Not saying Webber or Button are bad, saying the opposite, the car matters a lot and many great drivers never get a decent drive. So I support the drivers that are underdogs and got lucky enough to get into a car that they wouldn't have otherwise unless they had a lot of money/fame/fans

when I was in the transport refrigeration game
I had a right bummer of a job - having to spend the whole weekend

the refrigerated trailors running, what a dirty dogging weekend that was
I was made to leave the pits 2 hours before race starts, and had to spend all that time with girls

Hi Mike

when Senna raced F1, I think was much better, today toooo many rules/regs restricting the cars
that tiny back wing and them tyres has really slowed them down, its so close now
they should allow free for all & allow them to use whatever they like including turbo's/superchargers
that would liven things up again, I have also been lucky again a couple of years ago
I used to look after the chillers for 'williams' in oxford, including the wind tunnel
and have been allowed to sit quietly in the corner, during testing
there facility/garage is as clean as a labrotory - spotless

Hi Mike

when Senna raced F1, I think was much better, today toooo many rules/regs restricting the cars
that tiny back wing and them tyres has really slowed them down, its so close now
they should allow free for all & allow them to use whatever they like including turbo's/superchargers
that would liven things up again, I have also been lucky again a couple of years ago
I used to look after the chillers for 'williams' in oxford, including the wind tunnel
and have been allowed to sit quietly in the corner, during testing
there facility/garage is as clean as a labrotory - spotless
Best find a song for Paul now and RIP Senna

Hi RB

cant remember the name mate (getting old ! you see - struggle to remember yesterday) when you drive in, reception up on the right near car parks and if I remember correcly, drive down towards back and left for wind tunnel/chillers .... remember the chillers ok: 2 x climaveneta's & 1 x york, :) york for some reason had louvres and soundproofing (in the middle of no-where) and clima's had an early batch of problematic 'fuseung's (spelt wrong probaly)

Not been beneton mate but used to do dominoes pizza (haha) distribution, which used to be next unit along from 'Red Bull' ...... both have moved now......and did some work in cosworth in northampton but thats engine designs not F1

All good fun though mate, annit ? (jack and danny galore ) especially F1 weekends when you have a-z pass, including vip area's .... thats where the choppers land in the centre area of track....or it was

That's Grove. Their old place was right underneth the cooling towers at Didcot which you can't miss if you're there (monkey Spanners terrority) We just put some VAMS into the old place for new tennants

The helicopters were in the centre. We had special passes to get us there. our 'duty' was to ensure passengers were strapped in properly (all H&S jobsworth like) Mika hakkenen got right stroppy with me .. But his g.friend was really rather nice about it.. :-)
It used to be fun but Bernie had those turnstyles put in now it is worse than fort Knox getting in/out..

A friend of my then girlfriend was owner of the company who had the contract. He was a real pisshead and grew his own too. Real party animal he was (and still is) fun guy all round..

He would also do the copters for Noel Edmonds Airwave charity. I would be there helping the kids in/out and she would be hob nobing with the stars in the hospitality tent keeping them sweet.

BTW the hardest working pilot I saw at the charity was Mark Thatcher who was first in the air and last to land.Great with the kids and very giving. A nice guy and very polite. No camera's or press so he wasn't acting up either .........Not what everyone is led to believe

Paul.

I’ll list some of my vinyl collection (shows age) & they are in no particular order (well apart from Dire Straits). In my eyes Mark Knopfler can do no wrong. Saw them quite a few times back in the day. Also saw "the Boss" at Wembley - awsome.

The first gig I ever went to was 10cc at the Hammersmith Odeon with a girlfriend in '72ish. Notice that 10cc are not on my list (but I still have some old photos of the old girlfiend). Those were the days - young, care free & single.

“Tunnel Of Love” or “Telegraph Road” at full volume makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end & my eyes water with the memories it brings back from my younger years. Wailing rhythmic guitars get me every time which is a theme for most of the stuff I like.

And this one is probably what I’ll nominate to be played at my funeral:-

Stones
Springsteen
Foo Fighters
Boston – got 2 vinyl picture disk LP’s of theirs

Blue Oyster Cult

ELO

Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Try "Free Bird" at full volume after a few beers - YES

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Fleetwood Mac
Hendrix (the cat in my avatar is named after him)

Journey
Horslips
Manfred Mann
Brass Construction

Eagles
Bonjovi – the Mrs wets her knickers when she hears “Livin’ on a Prayer”.

ZZ Top
Yes
Emerson Lake & Palmer

Roxy Music

Joe Satriani – Excellent guitarist. This one's great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqM0NRUW7yI&feature=fvst

Van Halen
Some U2 – earlier stuff
Thanks Gary for reminding me - BTO. Got one or two of theirs as well.

This is no means all of it but as you can see most are from 70,80's & early 90's. My collection stopped soon after that. I guess this is when life became more serious!!
My son does a bit of drumming (god help us) & is well into the old heavy rock stuff.

I'm a bit of a frustrated rock (air) guitarist I guess. Problem is I'm tone deaf & can't play a note - but I know what I like when I hear it. Unfortunately I haven't heard much of late that floats my boat or made me want to buy it.

Gary, if you like BTO, Randy Bachman has a 2 hour radio show on CBC.ca or serious 159 every saturday eve. 7 to 9pm. He has a lot of cool music and music trivia, mostly from the late 50s 60s and 70s. The mans played with everyone.

As far as I'm concerned, BTO was the best group ever. Not sure if I can get CBC down here in Florida, though.

Through the web you can. People listen from all over the world. And yea, BTO was good, they get together for minor tours now and then.

Music is an individual taste. For me, it has to relate to a specific event, or series of events that happen (out of the blue) when a certain song is playing. I heard this one on the radio while travelling from one job to another, then, while doing a difficult job on a butcher shop some time later, and ready to rip the condensing units out of their position... this song came up on the shops radio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oLzX0RPquk

your right mike-its definatly an individual taste- got a new iphone -the wifes old one- just added steel panthers new album "balls out!"
got a catchy track taking the mickey out of tiger woods antics off the green! haha-not posting a link to it as it does use explicit lyrics!

Showing my age again but was reminded of this group recently. The Ventures, one of the most prolific musical rock age groups and here playing another famous TV theme...

The left hand drummer is Max Wienberg who backed B Springsteen.
And they are still playing.
