I bought a Dell laptop, Inspiron N5010, it didn't come with a serial port or com port, only with USB port. I have the download cable with the adapter changing serial port to usb port, but it still didn't work. My OS is windows 7 pro 32 bit with Wintrac 5.0.

Do I need to install the driver for that adapter?

you have to assign the usb port in use as 'com 1'

Reeferj;
You can't just use any USB adapter; I use a Keyspan USA-19HS; I know this adapter works with both Thermo King and Carrier. Ensure that it is installed correctly with the software provided or the downloaded Windows 7 driver; I will email you the Windows 7 driver. When you open Wintrac, make you adjust communications to accept the USB adapter port. The same goes for Reefer Manager.
If things are not set up correctly, then yes you will have problems.

Tried sending the driver but it keeps coming back; have you changed your email address?
No worries, let me know if you need it.

No worries; I popped it onto your mydrive.ch site.
Let me know if you're still having problems with it.

Tony, could you upload the reefer manager to mydrive.ch site, please? The latest one, eh?

G'day; Reefer Manager is the Carrier download program and you have a Thermo King unit, so you would need Wintrac 5.2, but only if you are looking to download information from the unit or change settings. Changing settings is best left to those to do it on a regular basis.
Be aware that you will still need the download cable as well as the software, and from memory, the standard HMI controller cable is different from the premium HMI controller cable (I could be wrong there), so'll you'll need to identify which controller you have before you go any further down that road.
If you're only looking for the controller operations, then I would suggest you check out the units ops manual first. What's your email address and I'll shoot one over.
The T600 units are a fairly new model and unless you know what you're doing, I'd stick with the basics.
Hopefully, the ops manual will help you with getting to know the unit.
Best regards........

By the way, a bit of useless information, the post fix 'R' refers to the compressor configuration in the unit, the rest of the unit is still pretty much the same.

Hi all,

You dont try connect to the TK units via usb. Doesn't work. You have to use RS232 port.

see you

you can connect with wintrac with a USB adaptor, can you even get a computer with a serial port?

A laptop with a serial port would be a second hand / refurbished item.
There's still some good ones around, but they're bound to run out sooner or later.
The newer Thermo King units with the SR3 controllers (with USB) use a standard USB flashdrive which needs to be configured through Wintrac 5.1 or 5.2; it eliminates the need for the cable, the older units still need the cable however.

T600's do not have a download feature

You're quite right, they use an optional DAS unit to access the data.
Maybe I should have re-worded it better. The access to the controller is primarily for flash-loading.
I have a habit of calling the comms cable a "download" cable.
